Limit Style Salmon Fishing Underway !

BERKELEY - Charter boat enthusiasts are enjoying some of the best salmon action in recent memory with limits of fish to 33 pounds being the rule for most boats , most days .

Lingcod , rockfish , striped bass and halibut are also available , but it ’ s the salmon bite that is grabbing most of the attention at this time .

The New Easy Rider is one of the best salmon boats in the Bay Area fleet and they have really been slamming the fish in recent days while trolling rigged bait . For example , on June 22 they boated 27 limits to 30 pounds . They next day , it was 15 limits to 24 pounds .

“ Live bait potluck fishing has really rebounded in the bay after several days of slow fishing ,” reported Captain Chris Smith of Happy Hooker Sportfishing on June 23 . “ Today we had excellent fishing . Our anglers boated 47 stripers to 16 pounds and 20 halibut to 18 pounds . The grade of the fish was outstanding .”

“ We had a really fun charter today with the folks from Ballast Point Brewing Company ,” reported Captain James Smith of California Dawn Sportfishing on June 23 . “ The bass and halibut bit all day long . We ended up with full limits of bass and 8 halibut to 15 pounds . Overall bay fishing has been on the comeback this week . Things got pretty slow during the big tides we had about a week back .”

Captain Quang Vo of Goldeneye 2000 Sportfishing remains focused on targeting halibut and stripers inside the bay . During his most recent trip , the boat limited on striped bass and added 9 halibut .

“ The tides are slowing down now , so the halibut fishing is going to get even better and we ’ ll keep on getting bass too ,” said Captain Quang .

Salmon Opener Proves Optimism Was on Target

BODEGA BAY - The opening of the ocean salmon season was just what was needed to bring out private boaters to the Sonoma coast along with filling up party boats .

Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing has been running his salmon / rockfish / ling cod trips on the New Sea Angler , and he ran a full combo on Friday , June 22nd for full limits of rockfish , two lings , and 4 salmon with a handful lost along with full limits of crab for a 12- man charter in very breezy conditions .

The limiting factor has been the wind , and many private boats and six-packs have been opting to stay tied up on rough days instead of heading out past the jetty . Captain Eric Holthouse of North Bay Charters has two boats in the port , and on rough days , his second captain , Josh Stevens has been running into Tomales Bay for halibut . On their last trip , their clients boated 5 legal halibut to 30 inches drifting bait in the bay . The weather was rough on Sunday morning , but Captain Stevens was able to make it south of the harbor for 5 limits of mixed grade salmon to 18 pounds along with a bonus crew fish . the private boats turned around , but it is getting flatter throughout the day .”

An unfortunate event happened on Saturday morning with the breakdown of the long-time area sixpack , the Miss Anita , off of Salmon Creek Beach . Captain Merlin Kolb made the wise and intelligent decision to beach the boat as it was taking on water rapidly , and this was the only option for the safety of the clients , deckhand , and captain .

Due to his swift action , no one was lost or injured , but the boat was a complete loss . Boats can be replaced , but people cannot be replaced . It is very unusual for a professional boat to be involved in a serious action as operators take pride in running a safe operation .

Salmon Action Rages Off San Mateo Coast

EL GRANADA - The optimism for the salmon action prior to Father ’ s Day proved to be on target as the action has been fast and furious most days . There is a line of salmon from W Buoy south to the Deep Reef , and the schools are both along the beaches and off shore . The action couldn ’ t be much better , and ‘ epic ’ is just a beginning of a description of the type of fishing experienced on most days .
