COLUSA / KNIGHTS LANDING
Fishermen Working For Shad , Stripers
COLUSA – Fishing is tough as the summer heat moved into the Sacramento Valley around Colusa – and few anglers are even trying for stripers or shad locally .
“ A few locals are getting stripers on the Sacramento River above and below Colusa early and late in the day ,” said Scott Kittle at Kittle ’ s Outdoors . “ Most are using top water lures for their fish .”
Dedicated anglers are also hooking America shad while using shad jigs and flies in the Colusa area during the evening hours . Kittle recommended fishing the gravel bars below the Colusa Highway 120 Bridge , as well as above and below the Colusa State Park .
Locals are getting geared up for the salmon season on the Sacramento , slated to start on July 16 . Remember that the bag limit is only one this season , due the concerns about an estimated low fall run Chinook salmon return this year .
DAVIS / FRENCHMAN LAKES
Trollers Experience Top Rainbow Action
PORTOLA – If you want to hook rainbow trout at Lake Davis at this time , trolling lures offers you the best chance of success .
“ Trollers are catching the rainbows while fishing lures at 10 to 20 feet deep ,” said Jeanne Graham of the J & J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort . “ The top lures are copper / red Dick Nites and Needlefish in the red dot frog and green dot frog patterns .”
“ The north end of the lake is producing trout averaging 15 to 19 inches long , with the south end is kicking out fish in the 22 to 24 inch class ,” she said .
Bank fishermen have reported catching largemouth bass to 2 pounds while tossing out worms , but she hasn ’ t heard many reports of bank anglers and fly fishers hooking trout lately .
Shore anglers targeting trout should toss out PowerBait and nightcrawlers in Mallard Cove and Camp Five .
Lake Davis is holding 81,109 acre feet of water , 98 percent of capacity and 120 percent of average . All of the boat ramps are open .
The trout fishing has been slow at Frenchman lately . One local fly fishing guide reported that 17 guys fishing with him over two days landed 13 rainbows at Frenchman .
Frenchman is holding 53,935 acre feet of water , 101 percent of capacity and 133 percent of average .

DEL VALLE RESERVOIR
Channel Catfish Plants Begin
LIVERMORE – Anglers are experiencing increasing success on catfish at Lake Del Valle , especially after the park district made a plant of 750 pounds of channel catfish the

“ If you are targeting them , we recommend using anchovies , mackerel , night crawlers , or chicken livers ,” reported the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ Catfish tend to be in deeper water this time of year , 20 + feet deep .”
Many anglers are catching bass while using a variety of lures and jigs . Keep moving along the shore , near cover . Plastic worms and drop lures seem to do the trick .
Most of the striper action has been centered near the dam , but some people are having success in the Narrows and near the dock . The marina staff recommended using diving spoons and lures out by the dam , in deeper water .
For rainbow trout , troll in the deeper water near the dam and Narrows with Speedy Shiners , Needlefish and other lures .
DON PEDRO RESERVOIR
Night Time ’ s The Right Time for Bass
LA GRANGE -The largemouth action at night at Don Pedro heated up with the triple-digit temperatures .
The Modesto Ambassadors held their 46th annual Night Classic on Saturday night , and the proceeds for this annual event are used for a special fishing day for disabled youth .
Jeff Huth volunteered as the emcee for the weigh in , and he said , “ 30.94 pounds won the event , and the winning team had a big fish at 8.40 pounds . This is a really good event , and I look forward to the opportunity to help out since as bass fishermen , we all have to pay it forward for others . Every team had put together limits , and the few boats that didn ’ t weigh in dumped their limits since they were in the 12- to 13-pound range .”

EAGLE LAKE
Trout To 3 Pounds Battle Anglers
SPAULDING - Eagle Lake appears to be in transition as the surface temperature inches into the lower 60 ’ s . The trout are up near the surface early , but as the sun climbs the trout drop down in the water column and fish have been hooked as deep as 25 feet .
“ I took a two day trip to Eagle last week and had a great time ,” reported Tim Henderson of Reno . “ I spent two mornings trolling the southern part of the lake . The first day I landed a fish and lost a fish . The one I landed weighed 3.41 pounds on my digital scale . The next morning , I caught one 2.22 pound fish at 6 o ’ clock . I got a second 2.74 pound rainbow at 10 o ’ clock and called it a day .”
“ The fishing was a lot better last fall , but its early and the trout seem to be scattered . I got one fish right on the surface , hooked two 12 feet deep and one at 22 feet . I tried threaded worms and grubs trolled slow and had zero action . It wasn ’ t until I started fast trolling with orange Rapala minnows that I got into fish ,” related Henderson .
“ I saw quite a few other trollers out on the

water and many of them were struggling . I think they were trolling too slowly . I did see one guy catch a trout well over 3 pounds while bobber fishing with worms near the Eagle ’ s Nest , but he told me it was the only bite he ’ d had that morning . It was a dandy trout that jumped several times before he could get it into the net ,” Henderson said .
“ I ’ ve been fishing Eagle Lake for over 20 years . When people don ’ t catch fish they immediately start assuming that there aren ’ t any fish in the lake . That simply isn ’ t true . The conditions are changing at the lake and the temperature is rising . When that happens , the bite is never at its best . I expect the bite to improve this summer and I think we are in for another wild fall . I got a 5.81 pound rainbow last fall on a fly and I ’ m looking to break the 6 pound mark this fall ,” exclaimed Henderson .

EAST DELTA
Delta Enthusiasts Are Working for Stripers , Black Bass
STOCKTON - Striped bass have been a bit scarce in both the Sacramento and San Joaquin Delta , but Dave Houston landed two stripers at 20 and 6 pounds running Yozuri Crystal Minnows on the San Joaquin .
He released the big fish , and he said , “ I did hook one other large fish , and it was ripping line towards deep water . The big ones always go deep , but it came unbuttoned before I got to my rod as the drag was probably too loose .” I can understand this as I always run a loose drag with the clicker on while trolling .
For largemouth bass , Randy Pringle , the Fishing Instructor , said , “ Where you find one , you will find multiple fish , but we
