been non-existent. This trip was north to
Fort Ross, but most of the time I have
been heading south to Point Reyes. The
loads have been light, but if you want to
get in on some outstanding shallow-water
rockfishing, now is the time since our loads
will get much larger once we start running
our salmon/rockfish/ling cod combination
trips. We have been averaging from 1.5 to
limits of ling cod along with consistent limits
of rockfish,” said Powers.
Second captain Josh Stevens of the
Take Five out of North Bay Charters ran
north to Timber Cove on Friday for limits of
rockfish, but the big swell slowed down the
lingcod action. Captain Eric Holthouse of
North Bay Charters said, “We are running
Wednesdays through Sunday on the boat
and looking forward to the opening of the
local salmon season. In addition to the Take
Five, a Grady White, we will also be running
out North River for halibut in Tomales Bay
along with salmon trips.”
Out of Lawson’s Landing, Willie Vogler
reported, “ A 20-pound halibut was landed
off of Marker 5 on Friday, and it is nice to
see larger fish at the upper end of the bay.
The surfperch bite has been good with the
best action on the low tide instead of the
normal good bite on high water. Crabbing
remains slow as the crab are currently
clutching.”

The Kahuna Is Back Fishing
Rockfish, Lingcod and Halibut
MOSS LANDING – The Kahuna is now
booking rockfish and lingcod trips to Point
Sur and Point Lopez, as well as halibut trips
on Monterey Bay.
“We made it!” said Carol Jones of
Kahuna Sportfishing after the boat returned
from the boatyard. “We’re all cleared to
go. She’s a beauty with some healthy new
engines!”
On their first trip of 2018 on May 12, the
Kahuna wasn’t able to make it down to
Point Sur because of the windy weather.
However, the anglers were able to fish
inside Monterey Bay and ended up with full
limits of yellowtail, copper, vermilion and
gopher rockfish.
Fishing for lingcod and rockfish on the
Monterey County Coast has been good for
boats departing from Chris Fishing Trips
