Chaney of the Rusty Hook reported goodsurf perch action with prawns or grass shrimp as blood and pile worms have been difficult to obtain with the ‘ Bomb Cyclone ’ storm on the East Coast . Crabbing has been fair , but there are still Dungeness to be had off of the pier with snares . Striped bass action remains slow .

Excellent Groundfish Season Ends
MOSS LANDING – The rockfish season along the Monterey County Coast ended with top-notch fishing on December 30 and 31 , 2017 . The season won ’ t resume until April 1 , 2018 .
The 26 anglers fishing at Point Sur aboard the Kahuna on December 31 landed 59 copper rockfish , 44 lingcod , 2 ocean whitefish , 136 rockfish and 65 vermilion rockfish . The 26 anglers heading out on the boat on December 30 caught 45 lingcod and 260 rockfish , reported Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing .
On December 29 , the 24 anglers aboard the Kahuna bagged 48 lingcod , 2 Pacific bonito and 240 rockfish .
“ Anglers had a little treat seeing bonito boiling around the boat as they were fishing for rockfish and lingcod . They landed a few and lost a few ,” said Jones .
“ We will be closed in January and February , as we will be in the boatyard for a re-power on the Kahuna ,” she explained .
J & M Sportfishing in Monterey also reported solid bottomfishing on the last two days of the season . The 30 anglers aboard the Chubasco on December 31 landed 10 lingcod , 185 rockfish and 40 Dungeness crabs , while the 38 anglers aboard the boat the previous day landed 12 lingcod , 8 cabezon , 2 kelp greenlings , 370 rockfish and 35 Dungeness crabs .
Since then , boats out of J & M have been pursuing sanddabs and Dungeness crabs . The 15 anglers aboard the Chubasco on January 2 landed 120 sanddabs and 45 crabs , while the 6 anglers on the Chubasco the following day caught 250 sanddabs and 26 crabs .
The boats out of Chris ’ Fishing Trips in Monterey are also fishing for sanddabs and crabs . The 12 anglers on their latest trip on January 8 caught “ lots and lots of sanddabs ” and 30 Dungeness Crabs , according to Chris Arcoleo of Chris ’ Fishing Trips .
Santa Cruz anglers have switched over to targeting sanddabs and halibut on Monterey Bay .
“ The weather has settled down and it is expected to stay that way tomorrow ,” reported Todd Fraser of Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz . “ Come fishing for the halibut
and the rest of the flatfish that are open . Who knows ; you may even find a white seabass . The perch fishing on the beaches and steelhead fishing on the San Lorenzo River is improving due to the rain .”

Surfperch Battle Anglers Off City Beaches

SAN FRANCISCO - Perch continued to be the bright spot for angling action along the city shoreline , as crabbing interest dwindled .
Angles belonging to the More Than Fishing group on Facebook continued to find action on scrappy perch along Ocean Beach from Seal Rocks to Fort Funston .
Pile worms , and store-bought shrimp and squid worked well , while others opted to dig sandcrabs .
Nicolaus Castro from Pacifica found success on a Christmas Eve trip , landing a beautiful red tail .
Angling interest inside the Golden Gate waned . “ Right now there ’ s nothing going on .” exclaimed Stefanie Scott at Gus ’ Discount Bait and Tackle .

“ There ’ s guys fishing for smelt at Fort Ross and Fort Baker . A couple rock crabs and not much else ! The current has been fast ! The mornings are slow ! Maybe it ’ s too cold ,” she laughed .
“ If you ’ re looking for crab go down to Baker Beach and toss a snare with herring . You ’ ll need a
lot of weight , between 10-14 ounces ,” she tipped .
