OROVILLE LAKE cont . “ The few anglers going out are catching a lot of bass , mostly small ones , while using drop shot rigs with Robo Worms and slowmoving swimbaits ,” said Boucke . “ There is hardly anybody fishing for bass and I haven ’ t heard of anybody trolling for salmon lately .”

Most of the fish are spotted bass in the 12 to 15 inch range “ slot ,” with an occasional largemouth showing in the bags .

Lake Oroville is holding 1,123.994 acre feet of water , only 35 percent of capacity and 55 percent of average . The water level is now 697.28 feet in elevation . The surface water temperature is 58 degrees and the water is clear .

Lake Closes Until February

YREKA - Lake Pardee closed to fishing and other recreation for the season on November 4 .

“ We are officially closed for the season ,” according to the last Facebook post from the owners , management and staff of Pardee Lake Recreation . “ It is a bittersweet day for us . This place was more than a business to us , it was our life and passion . We hope you enjoyed your time with us and made lots of memories . We would also like to thank each of you for your friendship and patronage the last 11 years . From our family to yours , Happy Holidays and best of luck in the future . “

The Rocky Mountain Recreation Company , which manages San Pablo , Del Valle , Rancho Seco and other recreational facilities in California , has taken over the contract with the East Bay Regional Park District for managing the recreational facilities . The lake will reopen on President Day ’ s weekend in February 2018 .

Paying Cutthroat Dues Reaps Dividends

RENO - The fishing at Pyramid Lake has not been as good in this young 2017 season as it has been in recent years past .

However , Pyramid is still one of the world ’ s best trout lakes , and it is still producing a fair amount of giant Lahontan Cutthroat Trout for persistent and lucky anglers . The bottom line is this : Pyramid Lake is still your best shot at a trout over ten pounds in the Western United States .

Some notable recent catches are Jessie Mandoki with a huge 20 pounds 8.8 ounce 33 ” long beast . Mark Bridgewater landed another impressive fish of 18 pounds 4 ounces on a recent outing . The takeaway from this is that trophy trout are the reward for anglers putting in their hours .

Jeff Morris was not as optimistic when I pestered him for a fishing report . Here ’ s his reply when asked how the bite has been , “ It ’ s been lousy . We fished all day today for a couple of dinks .”

Jeff is consistently one of the top sticks on the lake and very respected by Pyramid locals . When Jeff struggles to find big fish , it ’ s likely that a lot of anglers are also finding tough action .

The past few years there has been a strong shore bite developing by around Thanksgiving . This writer prognosticated a shore bite would soon be coming a few reports back .

Now , it ’ s time to eat crow . This year , there are minimal signs of life coming from the shore . It doesn ’ t help that Dago and Howard Bays are closed , as these have been some of the top spots in the fall .

Take Your Pick – Trout Or Cats

FREMONT – Trout and catfish action remains very good in the Quarry Lakes Recreation Area .

“ Lots of trout are being pulled out , and the catfish are still biting ,” said Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District . “ We had our usual Mt . Lassen plant on Monday with 1000 lbs . dropped , as well as an additional CDFW plant of 1000 pounds the following day . Another plant of 1000 lbs . of Mt . Lassen trout is scheduled next week .”

“ Folks seem to be pulling in the trout on Mouse-Tails or PowerBait ( primarily chartreuse or rainbow ),” he stated . “ Please be aware that we have started our winter hours this weekend , with the gates opening at 7am and closing at 5pm . “

Hugo Tejada of Oakland caught a 10 lb trout on Fisherman ’ s Row using a silver and green Kastmaster , Brianna Gutierrez caught a 3 lb trout on Fisherman ’ s Row using chartreuse Power Eggs . Finally , Bruce Qutermous Jr . of San Leandro landed two beautiful rainbow trout .

Also , note that the use of lead fishing tackle is prohibited at Quarry Lakes . You can exchange lead tackle at the kiosk in a “ 1 for 1 ” trade for stainless steel weights .

RANCHO SECO LAKE

Trout Plants Are In Full Swing

SACRAMENTO – Fall-winter trout plants are boosting the catches of anglers fishing from shore and boats at Rancho Seco Lake . Trout will be planted every two weeks through the end of the year .

The latest plant of 500 pounds of Mt . Lassen rainbow trout went into the lake on November 21 , just prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday , reported Dena Oneto at the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company .

“ Anglers are hooking fish all over the park while tossing out nightcrawlers , PowerBait and lures ,” said Oneto .

December 27 . All of these plants will be “ standard-size catchable rainbow trout ,” according to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District ( SMUD ).

“ Boaters are hooking crappie while using small jigs near the pumps ,” she said . “ Fishermen are also picking up largemouth bass on a variety of lures .”

Salmon Action Great As Season Enters Final Month

REDDING - The salmon season on the Sacramento River is slated to close on December 16 . After a late October / early November slow down the bite has rebounded big time . Anglers are now rounding up full limits chrome bright late fall run kings .

“ We ’ ve had full limits on my boat for the past 5 days ,” exclaimed Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service . “ We haven ’ t had any really big fish . The kings we are getting now are bright beautiful fish that run 8 to 18 pounds . I ’ ve been fishing the stretch from Red Bluff to Cottonwood primarily .”

“ As far as fishing technique goes , things change every day . I like to start out with plugs and then switch over to roe , but today was a good example of that pattern not working out . It rained almost all day and I couldn ’ t get them to show any interest in hitting a plug , but they would jump all over roe . We ended up with 10 quality salmon
