As of press time, Lake Shasta is 31
feet from maximum pool and is dropping
less than half a foot per day.
“I’d heard good things about the
kokanee bite at Whiskeytown. I’d never
fished Whiskeytown before, but Cal
encouraged me to give it a try. The lake
is beautiful and super clean. We fished
the Whiskeytown on the last day of our
trip and were able to boat full limits of
salmon in about 3 hours of trolling,” said
Martinson.
“We focused on the area near the
Highway 299 Bridge with Uncle Larry’s
Spinners. We started with pink spinners
and when the bite died on that color we
switched to green.

Fall Salmon Season Sparks
To Life In Major Rivers
ROSEBERG - What promises to
be a solid fall river salmon season in
southwestern Oregon is just getting
underway with the arrival of September.
The ODFW reports that salmon fishing
in Rogue Bay continues to be pretty
good. The majority of salmon are being
caught downstream of Hwy. 101. Anglers
are mainly using anchovies or anchovies
rigged with a spinner blade. Bank anglers
have been picking up Chinook on a
regular basis fishing from the North jetty
or the sand spit. Some of the best lures
have been spinners or spoons.
Summer steelhead and half pounder
steelhead starting moving in good
numbers as water temperatures in the
river dropped a few degrees. Spinners or
flies tend to work the best.
On the Middle Rogue, Chinook and
Summer Steelhead are available.
Chinook angling reports have come in
from above and below the Grants Pass
Area, with anglers using corkies, back
trolled plugs, and back bounced roe.
Plugs wrapped with sardine fillet or
tuna have had the best luck. Summer
steelhead being caught are on plugs,
spinners, and drifted night crawlers right
now.
Chinook fishing in the Umpqua Estuary
has begun with a few being caught from
the jaws to Reedsport. It is only a matter
of time before the bank angling in and
around Winchester Bay picks up and
some anglers are already giving it a try.
Smith River opened to fishing on May
22. Chinook fishing in the lower Smith
should start picking up and opened on
the first of August. There is no Chinook
fishing allowed above the confluence with
Spencer Creek in the mainstem Smith
nor above Johnson Creek in the North
Fork Smith.
Recreational Chinook salmon fishing
is open from Cape Falcon to Humbug
Mountain. Anglers may have two salmon
per day but is closed to retention of Coho
except during the selective and non-
selective Coho seasons. Anglers
have reported catching Chinook
outside of Winchester Bay
and Charleston last week.
