kings . We got them on T-55 Flatfish . With all the fish that are being caught in the ocean at this point , it ’ s just a matter of time before the fishing on the Sacramento ramps up significantly .”
“ When I ’ m not salmon fishing I ’ ve squeezed in a few trout fishing trips . My most recent trout trip produced about 30 wild rainbows on live crickets ,” said Weese .
“ I ’ ve been working hard with the Northern California Guides Association ( NCGASA ) to help save our salmon runs . Captain James Stone and I have had success meeting with Department of Water Resources and we are in the process of putting together a round table meeting with all the players involved including guides , water contractors and the U . S . Fish and Wildlife Service . The progress we ’ ve made is pretty exciting ,” exclaimed Weese .
The NCGASA is having a Save The Rivers dinner and raffle in Yuba City on November 4 . There will be lots of guns , guided trips and more up for grabs during the dinner . For more information , call Weese at ( 530 ) 755-7196 .
If you want to be in a position to score some Sacramento River chrome when the run ramps up , it ’ s wise to book your spot early . Both Robert Weese and Mike Bogue are top sticks when it comes to putting anglers on big , bad kings .
To book a trip with Weese of Northern California Guide Service , give him a ring at ( 530 ) 755-7196 . To arrange a trip with Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue ’ s Guide Service , reach out to Mike at ( 530 ) 246-8457 .
RIO VISTA
Heat Drives Most Anglers Off Water
RIO VISTA - Angling pressure remained light on both the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers as the summer heat continued to batter the area .
Aside from a few anglers trolling for salmon on the Old Sacramento River at Isleton , action was slow for everything else according to Craig Kamikawa at Fisherman ’ s Warehouse in Sacramento .
Chris caught this dandy mid-summer striper while trolling the West Delta with Capt . David Hammond on July 20 .

Nick the Informative Fisherman hit the north Delta with his buddy Justin this July and they ended up with their hands full of big bass !.

“ You ’ ve got maybe a dozen boats working the shipping channel and around the corner on the Old Sac up to the Isleton Bridge . Those guys are putting in time with spinners catching mostly weeds . Late last week a small flurry of fish was landed , then it went dead again ,” he related .
“ Another option for guys is to head past Rio Vista and troll around Sherman Island and Broad Slough . A few stripers are down there . The downside - wind ,” he added .
“ Through August we ’ re probably going to see a lot of wind especially with this heat . The first break we ’ ll get probably won ’ t come until the last two weeks of September .”

ROLLINS / SCOTTS LAKE
Chad Lawrence Nails 9.9 Pound Catfish On Topwater Plug !
COLFAX - Chad Lawrence took a trip to Rollins Lake in search of bass and ended up with a jumbo catfish .
“ I do a good amount of bass fishing at Folsom Lake , but after reading Justin Pleece ’ s reports in the Fish Sniffer I decided it was time to give Rollins Lake a try ,” said Lawrence .
“ I had some obligations in the morning , so I didn ’ t make it up to the lake until around 3 and didn ’ t get my kayak into the water until about 3:30 . I started off working areas of shade with both small poppers and small crankbaits . I started hooking fish right away and probably had landed a dozen bass to about 1.5 pounds by 7 o ’ clock . I was on my way back to Freeloaders Cove , when I shot my River2Sea popper near a piece of semisubmerged wood . As soon as I moved the popper there was a big rush and I was hooked up to something that felt huge ,” exclaimed Lawrence .
“ I fought the fish for about 10 minutes on a spinning rod loaded with 6 pound test before the fish came up . When I saw that it was a catfish I was shocked . I ’ ve caught a few on plastic worms , but I ’ ve never had one come after a topwater plug before . According to my Boca Grip the fish weighed

9.9 pounds . After weighing it I let it go , so I ’ m know there ’ s at least one big cat swimming around in Rollins ,” concluded Lawrence .
According to Jason Pleece , bass action remains productive at both Rollins and Scotts Flat Reservoirs .
“ I ’ ve been getting several bass each time I visit Rollins and Scotts . During the day grubs on darter heads and small Senkos work best . Early and late in the day the topwater fishing can be good on small poppers and floating rip baits . There has been a lot of boat traffic on both lakes but it hasn ’ t really effected the fishing ,” said Pleece .
SACRAMENTO AREA
Catfish A Better Bet Than Salmon
SACRAMENTO - The surprisingly decent salmon fishing thatanglers saw while fishing at the Mouth of the American during opening week has slowed down with the hot August weather . Targeting catfish in the Sacramento River and local sloughs is a much better bet at the present time .
“ Every morning a few kings are being by anglers fishing from boats at Discovery Park ,” reported Alan Fong of Fisherman ’ s Warehouse . “ Jig fishermen are using 3 oz . firetiger Gibbs Minnows , while trollers are fishing with Silvertron spinners .”
“ A few people are seeing salmon caught at the mouth of the American ,” confirmed Uncle Larry Barnes at Sacramento Pro Tackle . “ Most of the fish range from jack-size to 12 pounds , with an occasional bigger fish . Most fishermen are trolling with Silvertron spinners .”
“ The salmon action at
Verona has been slow ,
with just a few fish weighed in ,” said Tim Boggs at Elkhorn Outdoors . “ The better bet now is for channel catfish .”
Boggs recommended fishing for cats on the Sacramento at Knights Landing with mackerel . “ Some larger fish in the 8 to 10 lb . range are being caught at night ,” he observed . “ Smaller cats in the 1 to 2 lb . range are hitting during the day .”

SAN PABLO RESERVOIR
Catfish , Crappie & Bass Reward Late Summer Anglers
EL SOBRANTE - Catfish , crappie and bass offer the most consistent late summer action with the warm water temperatures at San Pablo Reservoir . The surface water temperature is 79 degrees and the lake level is 309.4 feet in elevation .
Summer channel catfish plants continue at the reservoir , with 900 lbs of catfish stocked at the boat launch during the latest plant . “ Chicken liver , anchovies and nightcrawlers are your best bets for catfish ,” said Marcella Shoemaker at the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company .
She said crappie will bite best on a redworm , Crappie Nibble or an Atomic Teaser
For spotted and largemouth bass , she recommended tossing out a Berkley plastic worm with a Gamakastu off-set shank hook . The best colors are watermelon candy and black oil .
Raven Bobo recently caught a big spotted bass at San Pablo , but didn ’ t weigh it .
SANTA CLARA VALLEY LAKES
Finesse Your Way To Bass At Anderson , Calero
COYOTE - Bass and crappie continue to provide great action for Silicon Valley anglers .
Finesse tactics were still the top method for bass across all the area lakes according to the
