The guys that are using the full size lures like you use for typical kokanee are not catching them like we are . The glow in the dark baits actually glow in the color of the lure . If it is a red one it will glow red , if it is pink it will glow pink . Typical glow in the dark lures just glows green . I tip them with garlic or tuna flavored corn .”

Arriving before sunrise , we met Fish Sniffer reader , Scott Lamphere , his wife Aurelia and his son Jacob at the boat ramp . Scott is an avid salmon and trout angler , but is new to the ways of the kokanee . Scott had previously attended one of James ’ seminars and was eager to get some on the water instruction and of course to experience some great fish catching action with his family .

Within just a short idle from the ramp , James stopped the boat at our fishing location . While I assisted with the gear , James explained the details of the day . It did not take long for class to start , as the left side rod indicated a kokanee had taken a liking to our offering .

I pulled the rod and handed it to Scott . After a spirited battle , Scott led the fish to the boat where James quickly put the fish in the net And so it went as Scott , Aurelia and Jacob enjoyed a morning filled with exciting kokanee catches and the inevitable long releases .

Scott quickly became fully engaged in the process . James coached him on how to pop the fish from the down rigger , how to properly bait the corn , the proper amount of line to let back and other subtle nuances . In short order Scott had the routine down

The lake was filled with lots of other boats trolling for kokanee and James , as usual , had a running conversation with many . It was apparent that many of the regulars knew James by the greetings exchanged , friendly banter that occurred and the many laughs that followed .

Back at the ramp , word was that the bite had slowed down . Two fish here , three fish there , six here , and so on . On the Tightlines boat , things were different , with limits all around .
