ROLLINS LAKE
Bass Main Target At Rollins And Scotts
COLFAX - “ I spent the 4th of July weekend up at Rollins Lake on a family camping trip and we caught quite a few bass ,” reported Tom Jenkinson of Citrus Heights .
“ We tried for trout but the trout action was pretty dead and there was lots of boat traffic . The best bass fishing was definitely early in the morning and late in the evening . We got most of our fish on Yo-Zuri Crystal minnows , twitched on the surface around fallen trees . The spawn is over and the bass are feeding . Most of the fish we caught were spotted bass with a few smallmouths mixed in . The average bass was 10 to 12 inches , but my son got a few larger fish including a 3.13 pound smallmouth ,” exclaimed

Jenkinson . “ I ’ ve been doing a little bass fishing at both Rollins and Scotts Flat over the past couple weeks . The bass at Scotts are definitely running large . Most of the fish I get there are 2 pounds or bigger , while at Rollins a 2 pounder is a very nice fish right now ,” reported Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista .
“ I was getting a lot of smallmouths at Scotts and I ’ m still getting a few early on topwaters , but most of the bass I hook these days are largemouths . The creek channel has been hot for me . Senkos , Rebel Pop R ’ s and small Yo-Zuri crankbaits are all working , but 4 inch motor oil colored Senkos perform the best ,” tipped Pleece .
SACRAMENTO AREA
King Catfish Reigns Supreme Over Capital City
SACRAMENTO - Fishing pressure has been relatively light on the Sacramento Rive in the Capital City region , due to heavy summer recreational boating traffic . But the anglers who get out early and late in
the day or fish at night are hooking some quality
channel catfish , particularly in the Verona area .
“ The stretch of river from the Verona docks to the third wing dam is producing good numbers of catfish ,” revealed Tim Boggs at Elkhorn Outdoors . “ Anglers have picked up quite a few channel cats in the 8 to 10 lb . range . The biggest landed this week , caught on sardines at Verona , weighed 15 pounds . The top bait is G & S Dip Bait .”
Sacramento Slough and the Sutter Bypass are also producing some channel cats , including some lunkers . “ One angler reported that a catfish broke his 20 lb . test line in the bypass the

other night ,” said Boggs . Very few anglers are targeting stripers . Anglers fishing sardines and pileworms who are willing to make it through the undersize fish are catching a few keeper stripers .
Uncle Larry Barnes at Sacramento Pro Tackle reported that the local drainage ditches and sloughs are producing cats now . “ One angler landed a 9 lb . catfish in the East Levee Drainage Ditch , while another pulled a 10 pounder out of a pond off that ditch ,” said Barnes .

SAN PABLO RESERVOIR
Plants Boost Channel Catfish Success
EL SOBRANTE - The channel catfish bite has picked up with the recent whiskerfish plants and the warm weather .
“ The catfish are biting on the shoreline by the main recreation area and by the boat launch ,” said Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ We planted 1,200 lbs of catfish from Mt Lassen on June 29 .”
Big catfish honors go to Sergio Alvarado of San Francisco , who caught a 8.6 lb channel cat while using shrimp at the Main Recreation Area on the July 4th weekend .
“ The crappie are biting in the back of Scow Canyon and down by the boat launch . Trollers are picking up bass while using Panther Martin lures ,” she said .
“ The trout bite has slowed to a crawl ,” Shoemaker tipped . “ If you are going to fish for trout , it would be best to fish down by the dam in the deepest water .”
The lake level is 309.4 feet above sea level and surface water temperature is 80 degrees .
SANTA CLARA VALLEY LAKES
Bass & Crappie Pace South Bay Sport
COYOTE - Bass anglers score on finesse plastics while crappie and catfish provide alternatives for Silicon Valley Anglers .
Drop shot rigs , small swimbaits and reaction were the top recommendations for bass this week according to the pro staff at Coyote Bait and Tackle .
“ At Anderson and Calero its a typical reaction bite in the morning , and once the sun is on the water you ’ ll need to drop down and fish finesse ,” said Jason Domnici . “ At Coyote , its about the same bite . but you can try tossing a jig or a big plastic worm and work it down one of the main body points .”
“ If you ’ re looking for crappie , Calero at the boat launch cove is still your best bet . The evenings are better , and fish your jigs or minnows about four to five feet down ,” he said .
Anglers were buying bait for catfish , but reports were still quiet . “ If

you ’ re going to go , I ’ d give Uvas or Chesbro a try during the evenings . Mackerel , chicken livers or night crawlers will work ,” he tipped .

SHADOW CLIFFS LAKE
Channel Cats On Summer Prowl
PLEASANTON – The weather at Shadow Cliffs has been HOT with the temperatures in the low 70 to the 100s , slowing down the rainbow trout bite , reported Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District .
The surface water temperature has been around 75 degrees , depending on depth . The water is clear , varying between 10 and 15 feet of visibility .
Trout plants are over until the water cools down this fall , with channel catfish plants replacing them . The park district planted 500 pounds of channel cats the week of June 26 and 750 pounds of catfish the week of July 10 .
“ Anglers report catching 2 to 3 catfish per visit ,” said Sullivan . “ The best baits to use for catfish are chicken livers and anchovies .”
“ A fisherman was fishing the Island pond in a float tube and hooked 6 bass , including a 6 pounder . He was using a sweet beaver in a June bug color ,” noted Sullivan .
SHASTA LAKE
Shasta For Bass And Trout , Whiskeytown For Salmon
REDDING - Great fishing awaits folks visiting Lake Shasta and Whiskeytown Reservoir . At Shasta , the trout and bass action is good to very good , while at Whiskeytown the kokanee bite is coming on strong .
According to Kirk Portocarrero of SacRiverGuide , bass trips on Lake Shasta are producing up to 80 fish per day for his clients . Most of the fish are spotted bass that range up to 3 pounds with a few smallmouths and largemouths mixed in .
Early and late in the day topwater lures and crankbaits are drawing strikes , but for all day action , 4 and 6 inch natural colored plastic worms are the way to go . You can catch bass in all arms of the lake at this time .
Trout trollers pulling shad imitating lures such as Ex-Cel Spoons , Wiggle Hoochies , Kastmasters and Tasmanian Devils are hooking 13 to 20 inch rainbows consistently . The trout are holding 35 to 60 feet deep . The Sacramento and McCloud Arms are providing the best trout fishing .
As of press time Shasta is 12 feet from the top and dropping about 4 inches per day .
The Whiskeytown kokanee bite slowed down a couple weeks back , but things have gotten back to normal and anglers are once again
