Kokanee Getting Ready to
Spawn
DOBBINS – Boaters getting out in the
early morning hours before it becomes
too hot to fish are hooking larger kokanee
at Bullards Bar Reservoir, but the fish are
beginning to transition into their spawning
colors.
“The larger fish are heading upriver to
spawn now,” said Craig Newton at Willfish
Bait and Tackle. “The fish are holding at
55 to 75 feet deep.
About 80 percent
of the fish have
red color on them
now.”
Anglers are
trolling with
micro-hoochies
behind dodgers for
maximum success
on kokanee.
Bullards Bar is
holding 664,209
feet of water, 69
percent of capacity
and 103 percent of
average.

CARSON PASS REGION
Trout Fishing Expected to
Boom with Cooler Weather
KIRKWOOD - The trout fishing at
Caples Lake was just starting to improve
when the Forest Service closed all of the
18 National Forests in California.
On September 9, due to unprecedented
and historic fire conditions throughout
the state, the USDA Forest Service
Pacific Southwest Region announced a
temporary closure of an additional ten
National Forests, meaning all eighteen
National Forests in California are now
closed. This decision will be re-evaluated
daily as conditions change.
“People were just starting to catch
more rainbow and brown trout when the
temporary closure of the lake and the
surrounding forest was announced,” said
Joe Voss at Caples Lake Resort. “Shore
anglers were catching rainbow and brown
trout in the 12 to 14 inch range while
fishing PowerBait, nightcrawlers and other
offerings,”
The resort’s boat tramp is close as the
lake level goes down, but rental boats and
kayaks were available for rental. The EIID
public ramp was still open.
Bear River Reservoir and Silver Lake
should also see improved rainbow, brown
and mackinaw fishing as the weather
cools down and after the forest fires are
contained.

CLEAR LAKE
Bass Guys Keep Plugging
Away
CLEARLAKE - “Even though it looks
apocalyptic outside and like the zombies
are going to show up any minute, guys
are still bass fishing and they are doing
pretty decent,” revealed Bill McDaniel of
Limit Out Bait and Tackle. “The weather
is changing every day. One day the sky is
blue and it’s not smoky and the next day
there’s not much wind, but it’s dark and
smoky out.”
The direction of the wind is also very
important. “We don’t have any big fires
here now in Lake County, but when
the wind is coming from one direction
,it’s dark and smoky and from the other
direction it’s not,” said McDaniel.
Anglers are using the standard baits
for this time of year, including drop shot
rigs, Senkos, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits.
There is also a frog bite available early
and late in the day.
