press time. “Most of the fish were caught
on Flatfish, but some were hooked on
Brad’s Killer Fish behind dodgers.”
For channel catfish, he recommended
fishing at night in the Sutter Bypass near
O’Bannion Road and Franklin roads
around pump stations. Shore anglers
should toss out mackerel and cut baits
for 2 to 5 lb. channel catfish. “Fishing
for crappie with minnows under bobbers
around pump stations at night is also
worth a try,” Pfanner tipped.
Fishing for catfish with mackerel and
chicken livers in the deepwater channel
and Port of West Sacramento is also
worth a try.

noted. “Shore anglers are hooking the
fish while throwing Keitech swimbaits and
other lures.”
He noted that “quite a few” catfish
are being caught on nightcrawlers and
chicken livers at the two lakes.
The Santa Clara Valley Water District
is draining Anderson Reservoir, but
bank fishermen are still getting some
largemouths on drop shot rigs and wackyrigged
Senkos, said Padilla.
Coyote Reservoir is closed to boating as
the reservoir level gets lower and lower,
but Padilla reported hooking a 3-1/2 lb.
largemouth on a recent trip there.
For striped bass, Padilla suggested
going to San Luis Reservoir,. Boaters
are finding “pretty steady” action there
on stripers in the 18 to 24 inch range
while trolling or casting and twitching
Lucky Craft jerk baits. Fishermen are
also bagging stripers wile tossing out
anchovies and threadfin shad.

Big Plants of Catfish, Trout
Boost Late Summer Catches
EL SOBRANtTE – Plants of rainbow
and lightning trout and channel catfish are
helping to keep fishing rods bent at San
Pablo Reservoir as the lake level drops.
Since June 15, the Rocky Mountain
Recreation Company has planted 10,800
pounds of Tsai Enterprises catfish in the
lake, according to Marcella Shoemaker of
the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company.
A total of 8,300 pounds of Mt. Lassen
rainbow trout, 2,600 pounds of Mt. Lassen
Lightning Trout and 2,500 pounds of
CDFW trout have also gone into the lake.
“The lake level is dropping rapidly and
the surface temperature is approximately
76 degrees,” said Shoemaker. “We
stocked 1,200 lbs. of Mt Lassen trout
during our latest plant at the Dam, where
the water is coolest. We also planted 1200
pounds of catfish at the boat launch the
same day.”
Big trout honors go to Brendan
Grosswirth of San Pablo, who caught a
6.9 lb trout using a Rooster Tail at the
Main Recreation Area.
Michael Mes of El Sobrante caught and
released a bass while using a lure.
Thomas Beutel and his friend from San
Francisco brought in 2 limits of catfish,
with the largest weighing 6.85 lbs.

COYOTE – Calero
Reservoir is the top
sport in the Santa

anglers to target
largemouth bass as
the weather begins

“The fishing is
going strong at
Calero,” said Jeffrey
Padilla at Coyote

“On last lst 1-1/2
hour shore fishing
trip there, I caught
and released 5
largemouth bass up
to just under 3 pounds. The fish are on a
crawfish bite, so many anglers are using
jigs and Senkos in crawfish patterns. I
flipped a jig in the tules in 5 to 7 feet of
water for my fish.”

SHASTA LAKE
Trout Bite Sizzles For Anglers
Trolling Thermocline
REDDING- The trout fishing at Lake
Shasta has gone from good to outstanding
in the span of a few days. The trout are
now locked into the thermocline and are
gobbling down shad.
“The rainbow trout fishing is really
good in the central portion of the lake.
I’m finding the trout anywhere from 80
to 90 feet deep. Most of them are 14 to
16 inches long, but the largest fish range
up to and beyond 4 pounds. I’m hooking
my fish on a variety of different shad
pattern spoons,” reported Robert Hower of
Redding.
“For the past few days the bite has held
up well into the hot part of the day. That’s
a change. For the past several weeks
the best bite has been really early in the
morning, but now that the trout are locked
