Due to unprecedented and historic fire conditions throughout the state, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announced a temporary closure of an additional ten National Forests, meaning all eighteen National Forests in California are now closed. This decision will be reevaluated daily as conditions change. “The trout fishing is best early in the morning and late in the evening for bank anglers,,” said Jim Graham of the J & J’s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort.. “The top baits are worms and PowerBait and the top spots are Mallard Cove and Catfish Cove. The catches include a lot of 20 to 22 inch rainbows.” Trollers are experiencing the top success while trolling at 20 to 25 rfeet deep with Baby Simon and Dick Nite lures in copper/redhead. “Largemouth bass are hitting in the upper end of the lake, particularly in the Join us for a unique experience that will keep your family coming back year after year! TIM NOXON LICENSED, BONDED, INSURED AND FRIENDLY (916)201-4648 email: [email protected] 3916 facebook: Fish Traveler fish limit, for two anglers, weighed in at 14 lbs, 5 ozs,” reported Tim Noxon of Fish Traveler Guide Service. “Grubs, spoons, flies, and even worms will catch these trout. I have been running 4 rods on downriggers, two at 7 feet, the other two I move constantly between 10 and 22 feet. We are catching fish on all four rods, but twice as many fish at 7 feet deep, ”Noxon related. “Look for groups of grebes and pelicans to show you where the minnows are. The trout will be under the minnow schools, AND you will see them “busting” the surface as they scoop up minnows. We are trolling fairly slow at 1.5 mph. I see many boats go right by the birds and set up out in the middle of the lake where there is no bird activity. Pay attention to what is right in front of you. The birds are there, the trout are rising, and the minnows {if you look over the side} are thick. This “minnow” bite is just getting started and should last a few weeks,” disclosed Noxon. BASS (925) 371-2628 EAST DELTA Striper Trolling Gets Tougher STOCKTON – George Wight, a charter member of the California Striped Bass Association, reported tough striper fishing on his latest trolling adventure on the Delta. The stripers have slowed down on both the San Joaquin and the Sacramento River this past week as we trolled a lot of water for only three fish, but one of these was a 25-pound lineside on the Sacramento. We released her in fine shape after a quick picture,” said Wight. Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, was getting ready for two tournaments for Best Bass Tournaments out of Russo’s Marina at press time. He was on the Delta last week, and said, “The overcast conditions with the smoke allow you to throw a buzzbait all day long, but I have been scoring best with either the ima Squarebill or Pinjack in Hot Craw.” “I use the Squarebill on the high tide as it is a shallow diver before switching to work the Pinjack on the outside weed line on the low tide. The bass are holding in the weeds, and you use the crankbait to tick the top of the weeds, knocking off some sediment and stirring up the bass. The Strike King bladed jigs in white/ chartreuse for shad patterns or crawdad color patterns with a Chigger Craw trailer is also working,” he tipped. “There haven’t been many giants out there, but you will get the larger fish when the wind comes up and limits the fish’s visibility. The water in the Delta is very clear right now, and the temperature has been in the mid-70’s as the past few days have been much cooler,” Pringle noted. “There are stripers in the San Joaquin, but most of the linesides are undersized. However, there are some keepers in the 22- to 24-inch range,” he concluded. - Dave Hurley EASTERN SIERRA Lake Crowley Offers Up Great Trout Action BISHOP- “At Crowley, the fishing around McGee Bay and the North Channel have been extremely good,” reported Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Guide Service.
