BODEGA BAY cont.
beaches along the Sonoma coastline, and
the big fish are there for the taking at Ten
Mile Beach below the Bodega Bay harbor.
Salmon remain the number one target,
but rockfishing has been the stable as
salmon limits are not a sure thing. The
winds blew hard during the first week of
August, but when the ocean settled down
at the end of the week, six-packs, private
boats, and the big party boat, the New Sea
Angler, found great action.
Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay
Sport Fishing and the 65-foot New Sea
Angler was thrilled with the change in the
weather, and he took the occasion for fish
a special spot over a wreck that he hits
a few times per year. He said, “We had
20 limits of lingcod to 24 pounds with a
number of lings in the teens along with
full limits of huge vermilion and copper
rockfish. One angler put in 9 big vermilions
and a huge copper along with two quality
lings. After loading up with rockfish, we
trolled for around
1.5 hours for 7
salmon to 20
pounds. It was
really nice to have
the weather again.”
Captain and coowner
of the Reel
Magic, a 34-foot
catamaran, focused
on rockfish below
the harbor on their
latest trip for limits
of bottom-grabbers,
and they picked
up a single salmon
trolling on the way
back to the harbor.
Mike Aughney, owner of the
Reel Magic, said, “This is the
time when the salmon hit the
beaches, and there are salmon
above Bodega Bay at Point
Arena and also below the harbor
towards Point Reyes. These are
the spawning three-year fish, but
there are 2nd-year salmon in the
6- to 12-pound range that are
holding offshore.”
“There is a line of cool water
holding krill out in deeper water,
and these salmon are loading
up on the krill. The ocean
conditions have been excellent
the past few years with schools
of anchovies that haven’t left
the coastline during the winter
months. The spawning salmon
are just gorging themselves on
the anchovies, and they look like
footballs,” said Aughney.
The salmon action should
continue as the bite trickles out in the coming
months, but there will be salmon landed along
the Sonoma coastline until the season ends on
November 8th.

Halibut, Rockfish and Lingcod Hit
the Deck
SAN FRANCISCO – The halibut and rockfish
action has been as good as it gets.
On one recent trip, Captain Aaron Anfinson
and Patrick Harrington of the Bass Tub in San
Francisco reported in with 13 limits of rockfish,
13 limits of halibut to 20 pounds and18 lingcod
while fishing off the North Bar and Marin Coast.
They caught halibut limits in less than an hour.
On the following day, the 8 anglers fishing
aboard the Bass Tub again landed limits of
halibut, limits of rockfish and 11 lingcod.
