SHASTA/WHISKEYTOWN
LAKES
Deep Water Trollers Score at
Whiskeytown & Shasta
REDDING- Trollers are smacking fish
at both Lake Shasta and Whiskeytown
Reservoir.
Trollers at Whiskeytown are trolling for
kokanee in various parts of the lake from
25 to 70 feet deep. Average fish go about
1.5 pounds and the large models pull the
scale down to 2 pounds and more.
Wedding Rings, Uncle Larry’s Spinners,
Apex Lure and hoochies are producing
the strikes. Lures should be tipped with
anise or herring scented shoepeg corn.
At Shasta, the rainbows are locking into
the thermocline and they are feeding.
Anglers dropping shad pattern lures to
the 70 foot mark are hooking limits of
rainbows daily, with top fish measuring up
to 22 inches.

Bass anglers are hooking anywhere
from 20 to 40 bass per day, primarily
working with soft plastics such as
Mother’s Finest Worms and Senkos. The
best bass fishing is taking place from 15
to 40 feet deep. Some topwater action is
taking place early and late in the day.
Shasta is currently 60 feet from the top
and coming down about 6 inches per day.

TRUCKEE – Boaters keep
catching limits of kokanee salmon
at Stampede Reservoir, although
the bite slowed down temporarily
during the most recent full moon.
“We’ve been catching limits of
kokanee every day,” said James
Netzel of Tight Lines Guide
Service. “Today we ended up with
limits for five anglers by 11:340
a.m.”
He is catching the fish while
trolling at 60 to 80 feet deep
towards the dam at a speed of .8 to
1 mph. The fish are averaging 12 to
13 inches long,
“The Paulina Peak Tackle
watermelon spinner has caught
90% of my fish on the past 2 trips,”
noted Netzel. “We’re keeping 12”
and up fish now at Stampede but
the bite has slowed with the full
moon. But that happens all the time
and will pick up quick as it started.”
“The odd thing about the larger
kokanee over 15 inches here
this year is that they appear to
be triploided, meaning they have
no sex organs,:” Netzel noted. “I
still have yet to see a fin clipped
kokanee this season. I’ve been
catching an average of 350
kokanee each week for the last 2
months; you’d think I’d see one by
now.”
Netzel will be fishing through
mid-September on Stampede and
then will switch over to targeting
king salmon on the Sacramento River in
the metropolitan areas.
