DAVIS LAKE cont.
4 to 5 lb. range. Two fish in the 6 pound
class were also caught recently. Your best
bet is to toss out plastic worms, poppers
and nightcrawlers towards Catfish Point in
the afternoons.”
True to its name, Catfish Cove
continues to kick out good numbers of
brown bullhead catfish to anglers fishing
nightcrawlers and prepared catfish baits.
The boat ramps are open and all three
docks are in the water, said Graham. The
Forest Service Campgrounds are open.
Lake Davis is holding 62,198 acre feet
of water, 75 percent of capacity and 95
percent of average.

EAGLE LAKE
Changing Conditions Send
Trout Back Into Shallow Water
SPALDING - “Temperatures drop, wind
blows, fish respond by moving back into
shallow water,” quipped Tim Noxon of Fish
Taveler Guide Service.
“We have followed the Eagle Lake trout
back to shallower water. We are landing
good fish between Pelican Point and
Slough Point. A good number of these
fish weigh in at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 lbs. This
has been mainly a hardware bite. We are
trolling bright colored spoons in water
from 6-15 feet deep on down riggers set
at 5-10 feet,” Noxon tipped.
“This is an early morning bite and is
usually over by 9:30. We are leaving the
dock at 5 and dropping the lines in by
5:30,” Noxon concluded.
These folks took a trip to the Lake Camanche Pond this
spring and limited out on exciting lightning trout.

Fish Eagle Lake!
Fish Sniffer readers David
and Ray Lamont took a trip
to Eagle Lake in mid-June
and landed a total of 17 hard
fighting rainbows to 3 pounds.
“We tried several different
things. Our best lures were
Cal Kellogg’s trolling grubs in
pink and Trigger Spoon Jrs in
orange and silver,” said Ray
Lamont.
If you plan on taking
your RV to Eagle Lake this
summer or fall be sure to ask
the folks at the Eagle Lake RV
Park about the Fish Sniffer
special.
No RV, no problem! Dave at
Heritage Land has a full menu
of rental cabins available both
large and small. Heck you can
even rent the Fish Sniffer’s

EAST DELTA
Largemouths Are In Post-
Spawn Mode
STOCKTON - Largemouth bass
continue to be the top species in the San
Joaquin Delta, and with the triple-digit
temperatures expected this week, the
bass holding in the coolest water near
current or under shade.
A few striped bass are still holding near
the Antioch Bridge, but most lineside
fishermen are waiting for the fall run to
arrive. The river salmon opener on July
16th will bring out lure casters to the
Antioch and Pittsburg shorelines in search
of the few salmon that seem to migrate
along the southern edge of the San
Joaquin River.
Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor,
said, “We will be holding our first Delta
Best Bass Tournament event out of Ladd’s
Marina in Stockton this coming weekend,
and I expect to have at least 90 boats
entered into the event. There is a good
topwater bite with the Berkley El Choppo
or with the ima Finesse Popper, but you
have to be accurate with your casts. The
bass will eat plastics on the drop-shot,
and as they are suspending more in to
current, the drop-shot presentation on an
8-inch leader with plastics in earth tones
are working. Greens or chartreuse are
good color options as the bass are keying
on bluegill or green-ear perch.
The bass are in post-spawn now, and
they are holding in current near the weeds
where the current
moves through.
You have to move
frequently because
it is all about
Los Vaqueros
Reservoir
location, location, location.
Limits in the 19/20-pound
range seem to be the
average tournament winner
with big fish in the 7-pound
range.”
Kris Huff of Phenix Rods
continues to find great
action during small ventures
into the San Joaquin-Delta
by throwing Scum Frogs
over the weed mats.
H and R Bait in Stockton
hasn’t been able to obtain
fresh shad so far this
season, but they are selling
out of most everything in the
shop. Bluegill and red ear
perch are the top species in
Whiskey Slough and along
Bacon Island Road with red
worms, jumbo red worms, or
mini-crawlers.

EASTERN SIERRA
Crowley Offers Excellent Trout
Fishing!
BISHOP - What do you get when you
have a fishing opener that is delayed by
over 1 month? You get excellent fishing
due to zero fishing pressure and zero
limits (no fish taken out of the lake in
May).
Those who were lucky enough to get
on the water for opening weekend, were
rewarded with some great fishing. The
brown trout have been hard pulling,
chunky fighters this year, and some larger
rainbows have been cruising the depths in
search of their favorite spring morsels; the
chironomids.
The lake level is high once again,
so most fish have been found in 20′ of
water or greater. There are fish that are
catchable in shallower water, however, the
numbers have been deeper.
Midges fished right on the bottom have
been the ticket and the fish have been
biting all day long. There are some peak
feeding periods taking place by midmorning
for 2 hours and then it becomes a
steady bite.
The wind has been kicking up in the
afternoons, but finding the lee sides of
the shoreline can keep you on the fish.
Damselflies are now very prevalent in the
north arm of the lake and the weeds are
establishing themselves in 17′ of water
