CAMANCHE LAKE cont .
solid for the few fishermen targeting the holdover rainbows with Speedy Shiners at a fast speed to 3 mph .
Trout plants should begin by the end of October or into early November as the water temperature is still 76 degrees despite cooling within the week . The lake dropped slightly to 83 percent .

CARSON PASS REGION
Shore Fishermen Battle Rainbow Trout
KIRKWOOD – Trout fishing is “ pretty good ” at Caples Lake , despite an early snowstorm that left 5 inches of snow on the ground , reported Joe Voss at Caples Lake Resort .
“ The snow has melted around the lake ” said Voss . “ Shore anglers are picking up mostly planter rainbows while fishing worms , Kastmasters and Mepps spinners in the creek inlet , off the spillway and near the dam . Boaters are also finding success fishing the same baits and lures .”
Big trout honors go to Brittany St . Claire , who landed a 4 lb . rainbow trout while soaking a worm near the far side of the dam . Another shore angler nailed a 3 lb . German brown by the spillway .
The lake level is only 6 feet from full and all of the launch ramp facilities are in full operation .
A good prospect for rainbow and brook trout is the West Fork of the Carson River in the Hope Valley , noted Voss . Anglers are fishing worms and salmon eggs , along with an array of flies .
Fishing pressure remains very light at Lower Bear River Reservoir . Expect the rainbow , brown and mackinaw fishing to pick up with the arrival of cooler weather . The surface water temperature had cooled to 62 degrees at press time .

CLEAR LAKE
Largemouth Action Slows Down
YUBA CITY - Largemouth bass fishing is tough at Clear Lake , probably due to a dramatic temperature change . “ The water temperature dropped from 77 to 66 degrees in less than a week ,” said Dave Brabec of Clear Lake Outdoors .
“ Everybody is struggling to catch 1 to 3 pounders ,” he said . “ The action isn ’ t great like it was 1-1 / 2 months ago .
Anglers are hooking the bass on a a little bit of everything ; there ’ s no one bait that ’ s working best ”
“ On my latest trip on the lake , I caught and released five little ones , ranging from 1 — 1 / 2 to 2 pounds , while using jigs and chatter baits ,” he tipped . “ I fished until noon in 10 feet of water in the lake ’ s south end .”
‘ There was a shad die off on Friday and lots of dead shad in the Lucerne area ,’ he added .
Anglers fishing small jigs in deep water around Shag Rock and Konotyee are catching a few crappie . The crappie action should pick up as the water temperature continues to cool . Brabec hasn ’ t heard any reports of catfish angling success lately .
The lake is 4-1 / 2 feet from full , a couple of feet above normal .
COLLINS LAKE
Catfish , Panfish & Bass Offer Top Early Fall Action
OREGON HOUSE - The surface water temperature at Collins Lake had cooled down to 73 degrees at press time , but the water needs to go to below 70 degrees until the trout bite picks up . Catfish , panfish and black bass offer the current best fishing on the lake .
Glen Bruning of Sacramento was fishing with his family for panfish when he landed a 9.4 lb . channel catfish .
“ He hooked the fish while using a piece of nightcrawler on a small salmon egg hook early in the morning off the campground ,” said Lincoln Young at Collins Lake Resort . “ They also caught six redear sunfish in the 1 lb . class .”
Bass fishing is best in the northern channel of the lake . “ There is a lot of activity in the evenings as the bass chase threadfin shad ,” said Young . “ Most of the fish are spotted bass in the 2 to 3 lb . range . For the top success , throw out or troll shad imitation crankbaits and other lures .”
For crappie , redear sunfish and bluegill , Young advised anglers to fish minnows and red worms around the main dock and the rental docks .
The trout fishing is tough . Anglers are downrigger trolling with lures and nightcrawlers at 45 to 50 feet deep , for the trout , but few are trying . Young expects the fishing to pick up by mid-October , providing the water cools down more .
The lake level is 22 feet from full , a great level for this time of year .
COLUSA / KNIGHTS LANDING
Big Cats Still Hitting As Salmon Action Improves
RIO LINDA – While channel catfish still offer the top sport

for anglers in the Knights Landing section of the Sacramento River , the salmon action has definitely improved in the Verona area .
“ While we haven ’ t seen any catfish like the 22 pounder we saw a couple of weeks ago , there are still some big cats out there ,” said Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoors . “ The largest we saw this week was the 13 pounder that Matt Damion of Rio Linda landed while fishing salmon roe from shore . He fished the First Beach area , about a couple of miles above Knights Landing .”
While Damion landed his cat soaking roe , other anglers are hooking their fish on mackerel . The average cat goes about 3 pounds .
“ The salmon fishing has been best next to the dock at Verona ,” said Boggs . “ Anglers are anchor fishing with plugs or spinners . The Rio Ramaza area is also producing kings for boaters anchor fishing and trolling .”
Fishing pressure for salmon remains very light in both the Knights Landing and Colusa areas . ‘ We haven ’ t heard of any salmon caught locally by anglers lately – most fishermen are concentrating on the good fishing on the Feather ,” said Stewart Mattos at Kittle ’ s Outdoors in Colusa .

LAKE DAVIS
Water Cools , But Trout Action Still Tough
PORTOLA – The surface water temperature has cooled down to 57 degrees on the north end of Lake Davis , but trout fishing remains slow .
Guide John Baiocchi reported catching two rainbows over 20 inches while trolling with his brown trolling flies . However , fishing slowed for the anglers trying the lake on the following day , reported Jeanne Graham of the J and J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort .
Since the water has cooled down , she hasn ’ t heard of any of the brown bullhead catfish , largemouth bass and bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish that were biting all summer hitting anglers ’ offerings lately .
“ It ’ s been very cold up here at 29 degrees this morning ,” she added . “ We saw a high of just 57 degrees today , although the weather is supposed to warm up this week .”
Lake Davis is holding 73,317 acre feet of water , 88 percent of capacity and 124 percent of average .
