Anglers Focus On Rainbows , Stripers

BYRON - Rainbow trout fishing remains “ consistent ” at Los Vaqueros Reservoir , reported Brian Demmunik of the Los Vaqueros Marina

“ They are being caught in South Cove and Oak Point as well as past the Rock Wall ,” said Demmunik . “ The baits of choice for shore anglers are garlic-scented PowerBaits , nightcrawlers or Kastmaster lures .”

The lake management hasn ’ t planted trout since June 29 . ” The water temperature is currently too high to safely plant trout ,” said Demmunik .

Striper fishing is still mixed with fewer “ shakers ” and more medium-to-large fish being caught , noted Demmunik .

“ The pier by the marina and from Oak Point south towards South Cove are producing decent numbers of stripers ,” he said . “ From shore , cut anchovies or shad are the baits of choice . Just a reminder : stripers need to be 18 inches or more to be legal .” Catfish are “ infrequent ,” though the lake

Top Water Bite For Stripers Busts Open

VAllEY SPRINGS – The water is warm and has dropped about 4-6 feet at New Hogan Reservoir over the past month . The stripers are pushing the shad to the surface for “ some really fun top water action ,” reported Bill Lewellen , who lives in Valley Springs .

“ It ’ s a morning and late afternoon bite ,” he advised . “ Most boats are using white Whopper Ploppers or shad colored flukes on the surface . On a good day , you can put 8-10 fish in the boat , just fishing a couple of hours before dark .”

Meanwhile , Trollers are fishing in front of the boat ramp area and using Alabama rigs or frozen shad .

The black bass are in the late summer mode . “ Top water action works in the morning and evenings , but you need to pull out the Senko rod and fish deep in the afternoon or find those island tops with quick access to deep water ,” he concluded .

Glory Hole Sports customers John and Harry come up from Escalon and Acampo to fish Melones and they just hammer the bows on a regular basis , bringing in limits every time they come up ,” he noted .

“ This week was no different ; they were out trolling between the two bridges and the trout were on , with the largest chunk weighing in at 6.5 lbs ,” according to Lewellen .

“ New Melones Lake is sure looking good this year with all the water and the big trout the only thing missing are the kokanee ,” confirmed Gary Burns of Take it to the Limit Guide Service . “ The big ‘ bows on Melones are making up for the lack of kokanee . We have put several rainbows on the boat from 3 lbs to 5 lbs and I landed one at 6 lbs over the past couple of weeks .”

“ We are still using all kokanee gear ,” he tipped . “ The best colors are pink and blue , whether it ’ s spinners , hoochies or dodgers . We are landing rainbows with the gear , but with the hope of still catching a nice kokanee .”

“ This side of the Highway 49 bridge has been holding fish , but we also reported fishing fished the spillway with success . In the a . m . we start off around 62 ’ and as it gets warmer , we go down to 68 ’ to 75 ’ trolling around 1.5mph ,” he tipped .

Local fisherman Ted hooked a 9 lb . largemouth while using a tube jig at the Parrots Ferry Bridge in 15 ’ of water . “ He quickly weighed her , snapped her picture and turned her back to fight another angler on another day ,” reported Glory Hole Sports .

Currently the lake is down 2.95 ft to 1065.60 feet in elevation . The water temperature is 78- 84 degrees .

NORTHWESTERN NEVADA

Carson , Walker Rivers Fishing Well

RENO - For the first time in almost eight months , all of the rivers flowing into the Great Basin are low enough to fish . The Carson River is almost at 10x its average flow for the date at 328 CFS as it flows through Carson City .

NDOW recently stocked the river with 915 catchable rainbow trout . The East Fork of the Carson River in Douglas County was just stocked with 1678 catchable rainbows . These are some of the first major plantings of the year ; an indicator of just how much runoff there has been .

Meanwhile , on the Walker River system , the West and East Walker Rivers are flowing at approximately 500 CFS each respectively . After the river merges together and becomes
