I have developed a passion for working with mothers and babies over the years. In year 9, I won £3000 for the special care baby unit at Princess Royal University Hospital after taking part in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative Project. I visited the special care baby unit, met some families and heard their stories; from this, my group and I created a short video, including an interview with a midwife and a narration of a couple’s experience of their premature birth and the baby’s early days. This video was shown along with a presentation that we gave to an audience including the Mayor of Bromley and other Councillors. Having watched several other finalists' presentations, we were eventually announced as the overall winners and given a cheque which we proudly passed on to the hospital.

I'm currently a part time gymnastics coach, which involves working with parents and young children from the age of 18 months to 14 years. I have been involved in gymnastics since a young age myself, so enjoy passing on my skills in my coaching and seeing the enjoyment and pleasure that both the children and parents take from this.

Why I want to be

a MIDWIFE

I am now studying for my A-levels in Biology, Maths and Economics and also working on an extended project on infant feeding. The diverse viewpoints from individuals are fascinating as there are so many arguments which at first might not spring to mind.

Earlier this year I attended a lecture about obstetrics and am also due to attend a couple of taster days in midwifery, at Kings College London and City University London. Hopefully, these will confirm my choice of career. I recently attended a talk by Bromley Healthcare in which a current midwifery student was a speaker. Talking with her, I found out more about the role of a midwife and what the university course entails. I recently participated in work experience with NCT, helping with the Baby Cafes and other activities, and also shadowed local health visitors, to help with my knowledge and understanding of working in this field.

I can’t wait for the day that I deliver my first baby and see the joy upon the parents’ faces, knowing I have played an important part in the arrival and care of their new baby.

Georgia Sullivan, a year 12 student who recently undertook work experience with branch volunteers, explains her motivations to pursue a career in midwifery.
