In this edition of the news you will see a snapshot of various types of calls that the men and women of San Bernardino County Fire District respond to on a daily basis. Covered as well is the latest advancement for EMS delivery and the importance of Fire Prevention Week, as well as the seamless partnership with the San Bernardino County Sheriff. Lastly, we detail a technical rescue response. INCIDENTS UNITS FROM PHELAN STATION 10 ASSIST SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SHERIFF On October 10, an employee at the Phelan-Pinon Hills Community Services District responded to an alarm on Snowcap Ave. When the employee arrived, he discovered a 38-year-old Hemet resident inside a gray BMW within the secured fenced off area. The subject told the employee not to come near the vehicle or it would explode; the employee then called the San Bernardino County Sheriff for assistance. County Fire Station 10 responded to the location and assisted the SBSD deputies with standby during a methodical negotiation process. Station 10’s crews remained on scene well into the night until the sheriff’s SWAT and bomb squad felt the scene was secured. CONFINED SPACE RESCUE IN ABANDONED MINE SAVES A DOG’S LIFE On December 31, units from Station 8 in Lucerne Valley responded to the junction of Meridian and Powerline Roads for a dog that had fallen into a mine shaft. Brush Engine 8 made first contact and determined that a more advanced operation would be needed to save the dog. The request for an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) vehicle was made and Rescue 40 was dispatched. R40’s crew worked its way into the scene across rugged terrain and was able to assess the mine location. It was determined that entry into the shaf
