I am privileged that my role requires me to promote the various work that Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service do to protect our communities. Variation is certainly a theme to my workload as during the last year I have worked with the Service’s Control Room, writing a monthly internal newsletter for Control Room staff; Operational Response Management, internally communicating the delivery of new equipment to firefighters; promoted public events for County Command Areas and Stations; raised awareness within the public, on behalf of the Transport Department, of brand new appliances becoming operational and distributed important updates to both operational and support staff from the Human Resources and Procurement Departments. Although my role has a connection to almost every department of the Service, the department I work closest with is Community Risk Reduction (CRR). At the beginning of the year, both CCBD and CRR will draft a campaigns calendar that will include national and local safety campaigns to be delivered to the public at specific times of the year. The calendar allows us to plan ahead and support the CRR Department to target specific audiences during relative seasons in the year. In the broadest sense, we will focus on home fire safety during the winter months, arson and wildfires in the spring, summer safety during the lengthy school holidays and bonfire safety during autumn. Within each calendar month we will feature different safety weeks or day events, that are national, multi-agency or Fire Service led campaigns that correspond with risks to the public’s safety during those periods. These campaigns include winter driving safety, summer driving safety, swimming in open water during the summer, chimney fire awareness as the summer comes to a close and Christmas safety awareness to name only a few. 07
