PENETRATION FIRESTOP MEMBRANE PENETRATION The general term used for the material(s) or device used for the protection of penetrations. The IBC code’s definition indi- cates the term includes both a through-penetration firestop or a membrane-penetration firestop. In NBC there is only one defini- tion which is for through pene- tration firestop and membrane penetration terminology is yet to be included. A breach in one side of a floor-ceiling, roof-ceiling or wall assembly to accommodate an item installed into or passing through the assembly. Figure 2.6 shows an example of membrane penetration of a wall assembly and the difference between the membrane penetration, mem- brane-penetration firestop and membrane-penetration firestop system. MEMBRANE- PENETRATION FIRESTOP MEMBRANE-PENETRATION FIRESTOP SYSTEM The actual material, device or construction that is installed to protect the opening through the protective membrane on one side of a fire-resistance-rated assembly (see Figure 2.6) Everything involved in protect- ing the penetration and resist- ing the spread of fire from one side to the other. This includes the original fire-resistance-rated wall or horizontal assembly, the item penetrating the assembly and the materials/devices that are installed to close and protect the penetration (see Figure 2.6). 41
