Oh, did I mention I have a victim inside the car?
I made sure the occupant on the passenger side
of the car was also trapped. So we had two
victims, we covered all bases – grade change,
stabilization, lifting and jacking with airbags,
extrication with rescue tools, patient package &
removal and when the door on the dumpster is
closed, it made very tight quarters to work in. If
you look at Fig 2 above, the victims arm is
outside the door and pinned against the side of
the container, just adding another challenge for
the companies.
You can easily add ALS skills into these
scenarios for significant compression injuries,
you could add a rope rescue portion to build a
hauling system to get a very heavy patient out if
needed, there are various possibilities to make
this scenario as complex as you want. However
due to some companies still being in service
and not being able to get all that equipment
there, we decided to skip that.
In Fig.4 I changed the scenario by having the
car upside down with a trapped occupant inside
the car against the wall of the container. I had the
machine operator crush the roof and compress
the dash so the occupant was actually trapped.
Again, making the companies utilize their
extrication techniques to remove the victims.
Stay safe out there!
If you have the ability to acquire a mannaquin
and have a machine on-site that can crush the
car, do it. I see far too many people train with the
old academy of smoke and mirrors and simulate
everything in training. By doing that, the only
people you hurt are your members because you
just wasted their time by giving them unrealistic
training. Sometimes those resources are a phone
call away or maybe you have to postpone your
training for a week till you get those resources, its
worth the wait to give your department realistic
training.
Real training = Real Results
