massive I-beam into a car for an advanced extrication scenario has me wondering if maybe he should be a firefighter . This guy can part my hair with forks on this machine . Having a very capable heavy equipment operator is a must when creating these types of scenarios . So I took these pictures to him and said “ this is the scenario I want to create , but since you don ’ t happen to have a construction ditch handy , do you have an empty roll-off dumpster we could use ?” At first he looked at me very puzzled , then instantly his eyes looked very similar to that of a probie rolling up on their first working fire with heavy fire showing , you know , eyes as big as saucers … “ YES !!” He said , we have a dumpster , I will be right back …. A few sips on my coffee and here it comes … a gorgeous empty dumpster flying high in the air on top of his loader forks . Will this work Mike ?? I emphatically said “ yes it ’ s perfect .” And with that , I could hear the possible groans of the
jakes coming to do the training in the next hour . But , when the rigs rolled up and saw the scenario we created , they loved it , why ? Because it happens and it ’ s realistic . So the dumpster creates our working trench . The metal sides could even replicate a trench box if one is being used . The department brought two training mannequins for me to use . They happen to have a massive concrete block sitting in the area we were going to train in . So I decided to put a mannequin at the bottom of the trench , place the block on the victims legs only so it ’ s a theoretically viable patient , then have a portion of the car on top of the block , pinning the block to the worker .
The image below ( Fig . 1 ) is the first scenario . We had the dumpster door open so it could be photographed
