Definitions
Ballast-loose stone or gravel.
Dynamic load- the exertion of varying amounts
of force upon a structural member.
Gully plug-a barrier placed inside a large ditch
created by running water.
Impervious-watertight.
Pinch valve-device on a roof used to control
water flow.
Scupper- an opening in the side walls of an
open-air structure, for purposes of draining
water.
Swale-shallow depression in the ground
designed to hold stormwater and gradually allow
it to infiltrate the soil down-slope of it.
Weir- a barrier that alters the flow characteristics
of water.
Rainwater harvesting-the accumulation and
deposition of rainwater for reuse on-site, rather
than allowing it to run off.
Restrictor plate- self-activating valve used to
control and slow the runoff rate of water.
