SAMPLE ORAL PRESENTATION #1:
You have thirty minutes to prepare for a fifteen-
minute presentation. Your presentation must be no
shorter than ten minutes, and no longer than
fifteen minutes. Your evaluators will be your
simulated audience, who will be simulating a five
member senior staff of your department (Fire
Chief, Assistant Chief, and three Deputy Chiefs).
You will be a Battalion Chief that is presenting a
proposal to upgrade staffing from three people to
four people on all five of your first-out engine
companies. This is a proposal that you have
created on your own, and are presenting to the
senior staff for approval.

SUMMARY:
Even if your department does not require you to
pass an oral presentation exercise, it is still critical
for any fire service member to be able to have
effective oral communication skills so that when we
are asked to give a presentation of any type, we
do so to the best of our ability so that we leave our
audience with a positive impression of our
department.
When you walk into the room to prepare your
presentation, the following equipment is on the
table or near the table for your use:
• 8" x 11" writing tablets
• Easel with conference pad paper
• Permanent markers
• Dry erase markers
• Pencil and pens
• Copy of the Department budget
Notice I didn’t mention the words PowerPoint,
computer, screen or LCD projector. While some
departments may require a promotional candidate
to prepare something in advance (giving them one
or two weeks preparation time), more often than
not, you’re just expected to deal with what you
have in front of you at the given time, which is
what reality throws us most of the time.
Well, this should be pretty easy, shouldn't it? It
