Addressing the Media – The News Conference

By Assistant Chief Ronald R . Spadafora
Sharing Information
Having been a chief officer for over 20 years I would like to share some thoughts on speaking to the media during news conferences while on the fireground . These viewpoints may alleviate some fears and concerns of other chief officers when thrust into the position of being a fire department spokesperson . Similar to preparing for a lecture presentation or a classroom session you must perform your due diligence and gather information about the incident subject matter . What are the circumstances involved ? Is your fire department meeting its objectives ? Are your members extinguishing a fire or mitigating an emergency ? What time of day did the alarm come in and when did first arriving firefighters get to the scene ? Approximately how many Department members worked ?
If your department has a press office , attempt to gather more information from its members which will assist you in answering news conference questions . If possible , converse with this person while he or she is en route as well as on the scene . Discuss the details of the situation and ensure the news conference is held far enough away from the incident so as to not interfere with operational activities .
Look and Act the Part
Prior to addressing the media at a news conference make sure that you look like the person in-charge . Wear your helmet . Look like a command chief . The media and the public love to see us in firefighting gear . We are their knights in shining armor . If possible , also wear your turnout coat . If you are not wearing bunker gear make sure you look neat and clean . Your tie ( if worn ) should be properly knotted , shirt tucked in and cap straight . Additionally , shut off your radio to avoid interfering with the press conference . Do not wear sunglasses . You are not a law enforcement agent . Make eye contact with the media during your interview session . Look straight at the person asking the question . Move your head slightly from side to side during brief breaks between questions so that each camera gets a full view of your entire face . Let the public see who you are when the segment is aired . Standup straight , be visually positive . Project confidence and credibility .
