never prepared for such follow-up questions. In essence, he was
so focused on checking the boxes that he failed to understand the
reason behind what he was asking his crews to accomplish. Don’t
let this happen to you; one of the last things anyone wants to be
labeled as is a “check the box Incident Commander.” Doing so will
also probably lead to your failing your promotional examination
as that is one common reason candidates are not successful – they
appear to just be checking the boxes, and don’t have any
understanding why they’re doing what they are doing or saying
what they are saying. #end

was practicing assigning companies at an apartment complex fire
that was simulated. He was rattling off assignments like a
