No One Escapes the Burning Waves

Prose / Q3..............................................................18

This poem is a villanelle and it was written with the intention of being one. In class we looked at this type of poetry and were told to write one as part of an activity. I ended up liking how it turned out. As I began writing, I had three very important tabs opened in my computer: a synonyms dictionary, a rhyming dictionary and an example of a villanelle. Using these websites to help me write, I did the poem. I wrote the three main lines that would be used all throughout the villanelle and constructed a story. It talks about a building being on fire and the people being inside with no hope of escaping. I particularly liked my three main lines, “He walks through the fire in a cocoon of flames; As the people in the building try to be saved; But no one escapes the burning waves” They rhyme and have a really nice flow. You can easily see that there was thinking put in the piece to make it have the rhyme and still make sense. This piece was edited only by me. My mom gave me some feedback, but there weren’t any big changes made. It was mainly just changing words to give it more sense and a better rhyme. There is only one stanza that I didn’t like very much because it kind of broke the rhythm and it is “Surviving is not what he predicts; Even while the crying nuns prayed; But no one escapes the burning waves” I could have improved in changing that verse. It doesn’t flow with the rest. In conclusion, I chose to place this poem again in a portfolio because I really like my poem. I enjoyed using the villanelle template and shows the experimentation I did during the year. I took a risk trying a new form of writing.
