Reflection

During this year I have written plays, poems, proses and tales from four stanzas to five pages long. I have varied widely in themes, characters and scenarios. I have learned the importance of editing and revising as well as the importance of reading. For example, as I read The Apt Pupil by Stephen King, I realised that he was a master of creating characters and a good story. So, I imitated his writing in order to understand what it is that creates a good story. I discovered that the answer is patience, editing and well built characters. From an effortless idea can come out a great story if you know how to work with it.

I learned that I have both strengths and weakness. I recognize that I have a great imagination as seen in Survival of the Fittest or Tank. I can come up with wicked cool stories. However, I am terrible at telling the story, which is in other words, writing it. I can never find the right words to say what I imagine and it is frustrating. So many amazing ideas and I can never quite get them out, I can never tell them as I wish I could. You can clearly see this is The Boxed Lady. Even though this is my biggest flaw, I have improved in telling stories. I believe that Sculpting Beauty and The Appetite of Change are much more well written than my quarter one pieces. They have a more structured story with correlation that my pieces did not used to have. I have grown as a writer, but also as an editor. I can catch small mistakes that I didn’t used to even notice and I now can give better feedback. I realised this when editing my classmates pieces for Sin Fronteras. This has proven that I will always be able to get better at writing as long as I keep practicing.

This year I realised that I love writing. That I love sitting down on a computer to create stories and characters. I remember being in ninth grade trying to decide whether or not to take the class and I am glad I did. Lit Mag has been one of my favorite classes this year and I will miss it next year.
