Final Portfolio - "Sealing It With a Bow" Final Portfolio | Page 3

Editor's Note

After a year of writing for this class I have learned that telling a story is no easy task. It is as difficult as painting a portrait or solving a math problem. It a process of creating a scene with characters and a plot. It takes a lot of revision to perfect the flow of the piece and to catch all the mistakes. To cut the extra parts and to include ones that will help the reader understand.

I am a person that chooses to invent a story rather than writing one that has already happened. I prefer fiction because I believe that it is so much more interesting, more intriguing and exciting that real life. John Cheever once said “Fiction is art and art is the triumph over chaos… to celebrate a world that lies spread out around us like a bewildering and stupendous dream.” I couldn’t agree more. It is such a great challenge to create a world and then writing it out so real that when someone reads it, they feel as part of it. That is why I love writing fiction and that is what you will find in this portfolio; poems and proses of adventure, mystery, suspense, drama and terror.

The pieces we arranged under subtitles depending on the content, the intention and inspiration of where they came from. The first three pieces are under Blue + Red = Pollock because the first piece talks about the ocean, the second talks about a fire in a building and the last is about a fight in a diner over a burger that creates a Pollock painting. The next subtitle is Crazy is Real because all of the pieces under this subtitle are crazy and/or creepy. The first two are very original because of the story. Both sinister and even uncomfortable to read. The other two were inspired by Tim Burton's poems and follow a similar narration. The third subtitle, Wonder Woman, represents three pieces that talk about women's inequalities and about woman's power. They all have a woman as a protagonist, talk about different situations in which women are in and show their strength.

So, as my last portfolio of the year, I will show some of my best work, some of my worst; I will show you that a good writer also has crappy pieces. I will show you a sneak peak to where my imagination can take me and as you read through it, I will take you with me on a journey that compiles a year’s work in ten pieces. So, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Sincerely,

Ana Paula Ibarra
