Field Guide: Amphibians of Manu | Page 9

The Manu Learning Centre

The majority of the information used to produce this guide was collected from the Manu Learning Center ( MLC ) reserve ( 71 ° 23 ’ 28 ” W 12 ° 47 ’ 21 ” S ). The MLC lies within the cultural buffer zone of the Manu Biosphere Reserve located directly on the bank of the Alto Madre de Dios River . It consists of 643 ha of foothill tropical forest accessed by a 20 km trail system , covering an altitude range of 450-750 m asl . The MLC is partly bordered by areas of agricultural land and areas of current logging practices but it had been strictly protected from hunting and other negative human impacts since 2002 . Beyond the MLC to the west lies the core area of the Manu National Park . To the east of the reserve lies an indigenous protected area , the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve , which encompasses 402 335 ha of forest .
The MLC forest had historically experienced various types of human disturbance such as a minimal disturbance in form of selectively logging ( herein termed MDF - ceased in 1990 ), partial clearance for small scale agriculture ( herein termed PCR - ceased ~ 1980 ) and complete clearance by felling and conversion to large scale agriculture ( herein termed CCR - ceased ~ 1970 ). However , the highest areas of the slopes of Piñi Piñi range in ( reaching up to 1300 m asl ) probably have suffered very little impact other than subsistence hunting by local communities . At the time of production of this guide the MLC forests had been regenerating for 30-50 years , so that the whole area is once again covered by closed canopy tropical forest . The MLC provides an ideal opportunity to investigate the dynamics and value of regenerating forests .
