Description: The dorsum ground colour varies from orange
brown to greyish brown. It presents dorsolateral folds and
a small interorbital fold. The venter is smooth and whitish
with brown flecks on the throat. It has a dark face mask,
transverse marks on the limbs, an X shaped marking in
the middle of the dorsum and chevron-shaped markings
on the dorsum. The groin, anterior surfaces of the thighs
and posterior surfaces of the tibia are orange, red or pink,
but in some individuals this colouration can be absent. The
posterior surfaces of the thighs are brown with orange
flecks. In some individuals an orange, red or pink blotch can
be present.
Descripción: El color del dorso varía de marrón anaranjado
a marrón grisáceo. Presenta pliegues dorsolaterales y un
pequeño pliegue interorbital. El vientre es liso y de color
blanquecino con un moteado marrón en la garganta. Tiene
una máscara facial oscura, marcas transversales en las patas,
una marca en forma de X en el medio del dorso y marcas con
forma triangular en el dorso. La ingle, superficies anteriores de
los muslos y superficies posteriores de las tibias son naranjas,
rojas o rosas, aunque en algunos individuos esta coloración
puede no estar presente. Las superficies posteriores de los
muslos son marrones con motas naranjas. Y en algunos
individuos puede haber una mancha naranja, roja o rosa.
Similar species: Pristimantis skydmainos has a different iris,
less dark in the face, less conspicuous dorsolateral folds
and lacks the red colouration. P. peruvianus and P. reichlei
are similar, but lack the orange/red/pink colouration on the
groin and limbs. They also differs in that they have more
conspicuous orange-yellow flecks on the back of the thighs.
P. reichlei and P. fenestratus lack dorsolateral folds. P. toftae
has a yellow spot on the groin.
Especies similares: Pristimantis skydmainos tiene un iris
diferente, menos oscuro en la cara, pligues dorsolaterales
menos marcados y no tiene coloración roja. P. peruvianus y
P. reichlei son parecidas, pero tampoco tienen la coloración
naranja/roja/naranja en las ingles y patas. También presentan
motas naranjas-amarillas más llamativas en la parte de atrás
de los muslos. P. reichlei y P. fenestratus no presentan pliegues
dorsolaterales. P. toftae tiene un punto amarillo en la ingle.
Habitat and ecology: It is an inhabitant of lowland tropical
forests. It is active during the day on the ground and can
be found at night on low vegetation. The call is loud and
sounds like a trumpeter. They lay up to 43 eggs in the leaf
litter and the female will guard the clutch.
Hábitat y ecología: Habita en bosques tropicales de tierras
bajas. Es activo durante el día en el suelo del bosque, y puede
ser encontrada sobre vegetación baja por la noche. El canto
es sonoro y se parece a una trompeta. Ponen hasta 43 huevos
en la hojarasca y la hembra protege la puesta.
At the MLC: It is an uncommon species in the reserve. It has
been found almost always in minimally disturbed forest,
and a few times in partially cleared and now regenerating
forest.
En el MLC: Es una especie poco común en la reserva. Ha sido
encontrada casi siempre en bosque mínimamente alterado y
en unas pocas ocasiones en bosque parcialmente aclarado y
ahora en regeneración.
