Noblella myrmecoides Craugastoridae
Description : The dorsum of this tiny frog is usually brown with some darker markings . Occasionally a longitudinal middorsal stripe is present . The flanks are the same colour as the dorsum with some dark spots and markings . It has white labial bars and two suprainguinal dark spots . The limbs have transverse bands . The venter is dark with a fine white mottling . The iris is golden with black reticulations and a median horizontal black streak .
Similar species : Noblella sp1 is almost identical and it represents a cryptic species , which inhabits higher altitudes . Comparing with the individuals that we have found , Noblella sp1 has a very contrasting pattern of dark brown in the flanks and light brown on the dorsum . Furthermore , it does not have conspicuous white lip bars . The size , lack of toe pads and coloration distinguishes it from the other species that occur in the same habitat . Noblella pygmaea lacks the suprainguinal black spots and has another general pattern of colouration .
Habitat and ecology : This terrestrial frog inhabits lowland and premontane rainforest where it lives within the leaf litter . It is not known to occur in disturbed habitats . It feeds on ants .
At the MLC : Found only in minimally disturbed forest areas at 450 m asl , both diurnally and nocturnally . On two occasions , two individuals have been found together . In these cases one individual showed the mid-dorsal stripe whilst the other did not .

Descripción : El dorso de esta diminuta rana es por lo general marrón con algunas marcas oscuras . Ocasionalmente presenta una banda longitudinal mediodorsal . Los flancos son del mismo color que el dorso y tienen algunos puntos y marcas oscuras . Tiene bandas labiales blancas y dos puntos oscuros suprainguinales . Las patas tienen bandas transversales . El vientre es oscuro con un fino moteado blanco . El iris es dorado con reticulaciones negras y una banda negra horizontal cruzándolo .
Especies similares : Noblella sp1 es prácticamente idéntica y representa una especie críptica que habita a mayor altitud . Comparándola con los individuos que hemos encontrado , Noblella sp1 tiene un patrón muy contrastado con flancos marrón oscuro y dorso marrón claro . Además no tiene barras labiales blancas evidentes . El tamaño , ausencia de almohadillas digitales y coloración la diferencian de otras especies que ocupan los mismos hábitats . Noblella pygmaea no presenta los puntos negros suprainguinales y tiene otro patrón de coloración
Hábitat y ecología : Esta rana terrestre habita selvas tropicales de tierras bajas y premontanas , donde vive en la hojarasca . No se ha encontrado en hábitats alterados . Se alimenta de hormigas .
En el MLC : Solo se ha encontrado en bosque mínimamente alterado a unos 450 msnm , tanto de noche como de día . En dos ocasiones , se han encontrado dos individuos juntos . En estos casos , uno de los individuos mostraba la banda mediodorsal mientras que el otro no .
Estado de la UICN : Preocupación menor . Estable . ( Ver . 3.1 )
