Field Guide: Amphibians of Manu | Page 42

Centrolenidae Centrolenidae is the family of the glass frogs. There are 34 species in Peru, 4 in the Madre de Dios department and 7 in the Manu area of which we include 3 species in this guide. They are green, except a couple of yellow species, with or without some small spots. Glass frogs are small to medium frogs. The common name comes from their transparent venter that reveals their internal organs, feature especially distinctive of the genus Hyalonobatrachium. Toe pads have a truncated shape. Identifying species of this family can be challenging as they are fairly similar between them; the iris, the amount of webbing and the visibility of the internal organs are the best features for identification. Centrolenidae They are arboreal and nocturnal. They live in streams and are pretty sensitive to habitat disturbances, especially water pollution. Glass frogs lay their eggs out of the water in leaves or rocks. They often show parental care of their clutches of eggs, and males can fight to death when in mating season. For this purpose males of some genus of the family have spines in the forelegs. Cochranella nola
