Rhaebo guttatus
Rhaebo guttatus
Scientific synonyms/Sinónimos científicos: Bufo guttatus
Common names/Nombres comunes: Spotted toad/Sapo gigante de Cuyabeno
Description: This large toad has a contrasting pattern of
dark brown/black flanks and a reddish brown/orangey tan
dorsum. The skin texture of the dorsum is smooth but some
low warts are present. The parotoid glands are large and
prominent. Between the eye and the snout it has a small
ridge. The venter is black with minute light flecks. The iris is
gold with fine black reticulations.
Similar species: Rhaebo ecuadoriensis is quite similar but
lacks the preocular ridge and has an uniformly coloured belly.
Rhinella marina lacks the distinctive pattern of this species.
Habitat and ecology: This terrestrial, nocturnal species is
an inhabitant of riverbanks and riverine forests in lowland
tropical forest. Its altitudinal range is from 50 to 860 m asl.
It does not occur in altered habitats. It breeds in temporal
and permanent ponds; the toads can even dig the ponds by
themselves. If threatened it will raise the body, stretching out
the front legs and swelling. It is also able to defend itself by
squirting a toxic substance from its parotoid glands towards
the predator.
At the MLC: Found once in partially cleared and now
regenerating forest and once in minimally disturbed forest.
In both ocassions they were adult individuals.
IUCN Status: Least Concern. Stable. (Ver. 3.1)
individuos adultos.
Bufonidae
Estado de la UICN: Preocupación menor. Estable. (Ver. 3.1)
