Description: This small frog has a dark brown dorsum with
lighter dorsolateral stripes. The hind legs are orangey brown
with dark brown transversal bands. It shows a wide black
lateral band that runs from the snout to the groin. Below th is
band there is a narrow discontinuous white stripe. The arms
have an orange tinge. The venter is white and the throat is
yellow in males. The iris is bronze with black reticulations and
a golden ring around the pupil.
Similar species: Allobates trilineatus has a longitudinal
middorsal stripe. A. conspicuus has an orange dorsal
coloration instead of dark brown, faint dorsolateral stripes
and its black lateral stripe widens towards the groin.
Habitat and ecology: It inhabits primary and secondary
foothill and montane forests between 820 and 1480 m asl.
It is found near streams and other bodies of water. It is most
active early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The
individuals we have found in the Shintuya range seem to be
more slender, have a lighter venter and less webbing in the
toes than the individuals from San Pedro.

Descripción: Esta pequeña rana tiene un dorso marrón oscuro
con bandas dorsolaterales más claras. Las patas traseras son
marrón anaranjado con bandas transversales marrón oscuro.
Muestra una banda lateral negra ancha que va del hocico a
la ingle. Debajo de esta banda hay una línea blanca estrecha
y discontínua. Las patas delanteras tienen un toque naranja.
El vientre es blanco y la garganta de los machos es amarilla.
El iris es bronce con reticulaciones negras y un anillo dorado
alrededor de la pupila.
Especies similares: Allobates trilineatus tiene una banda
longitudinal medio dorsal. A. conspicuus tiene una coloración
dorsal naranja en vez de marrón oscuro, bandas dorsolaterales
poco marcadas y la banda lateral negra se ensancha hacia la
ingle.
Hábitat y ecología: Habita bosques primarios y secundarios
en zonas montanas y de piedemonte entre los 820 y los 1480
msnm. Se encuentra cerca de quebradas y de otros cuerpos
de agua. Es más activa pronto por la mañana y en las últimas
horas de la tarde. Los individuos que hemos encontrado en
la cordillera de Shintuya parecen ser más esbeltos, tener
un vientre más claro y menos palmeadura entre los dedos
traseros que los individuos de San Pedro.
