Leptodactylus pentadactylus
Leptodactylus pentadactylus
Scientific synonyms/Sinónimos científicos: Common names/Nombres comunes: Smoky jungle frog/Rana comepollos
Description: This large frog has a reddish brown dorsum with
a few dark brown transverse bands. It has prominent dark
dorsolateral folds that extend from the eye to the groin. It
also has a fold that starts in the tympanum and carries to
the flanks. A black stripe extends from the snout to the
flanks, passing through the eye and tympanum. The lip has
triangular-shaped dark markings. Transverse bands are
present on the limbs. The posterior surfaces of the thighs
are black with cream flecks. The venter is dark grey with a
bold white mottling. The iris is brownish bronze.
Similar species: Leptodactylus knudseni differs mainly in
having a white belly, has dorsolateral folds before the groin
area, and no fold from the tympanum to the flanks. Other
Leptodactylus in the area lack the distinctive labial markings
and have a different pattern of coloration.
Habitat and ecology: This nocturnal, terrestrial frog feeds on
a large array of prey including insects, mollusks and other
frogs. They can be found living in burrows, between tree
roots and under logs. As with other members in the family,
they construct foam nests where around 1000 eggs are
deposited. The tadpoles will later develop in this nest.
At the MLC: Found occasionally in holes close to bodies of
water, but have also been found up in the Piñi Piñi range, at
1000 m a.s.l.
Leptodactylidae
IUCN Status: Least Concern. Stable. (Ver. 3.1)
Estable. (Ver. 3.1)
