Description: This medium sized frog has a bright green
dorsum with small white and yellow flecks. It has a slightly
upturned snout. The outer edges of the limbs are white.
It has white dermal flaps (skin extensions) in the cloaca
opening. The fingers are one third webbed and the toes are
fully webbed. The venter is white and the throat is bright
lime green in breeding males. The iris is pale copper with
small black flecks.
Similar species: Sphaenorhynchus lacteus is bigger, lighter
in colour, has a canthal stripe and lacks the white spots on
the back. Hyalonobatrachium carlesvilai is slender, has a
completely see-through venter and has a different snout
shape. Hypsiboas cinerascens has a different snout shape,
has a dark ring around the eye, has a granular skin and usually
shows some reddish coloration. Other green tree frogs have
dorsolateral or canthal stripes.
Habitat and ecology: This semiaquatic and nocturnal frog
is found next to permanent and semipermanent ponds,
especially in areas of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes). It
breeds all year round. Females lay clutches of 150-220 eggs
on the water. It feeds almost exclusively on ants.

Descripción: Esta rana de tamaño mediano tiene un dorso
de color verde vivo con pequeñas motas blancas y amarillas.
El hocico es ligeramente respingón. Los bordes exteriores
de las patas son blancos. Tiene solapas dermales blancas
(extensiones de piel) en la abertura cloacal. Los dedos
delanteras están palmeados en un tercio y los dedos traseros
completamente. El vientre es blanco y la garganta en machos
en celo es verde lima vivo. El iris es cobrizo pálido con
pequeñas motas negras.
Especies similares: Sphaenorhynchus lacteus es más grande,
de coloración más clara, tiene una banda cantal y no tiene
puntos blancos en la espalda. Hyalonobatrachium carlesvilai
es más esbelta, tiene un vientre transparente y tiene un
hocico de forma diferente. Hypsiboas cinerascens tiene un
hocico de forma diferente, tiene un anillo negro alrededor
del ojo, tiene la piel granular y normalmente presente algo
de coloración rojiza. Otras ranas arbóreas verdes tienen
bandas dorsolaterales o cantales.
Hábitat y ecología: Esta rana semiacuática y nocturna se
encuentra junto a charcas permanentes o semipermanentes
especialmente en áreas con lechuga de agua (Pistia
stratiotes). Se reproduce durante todo el año. Las hembras
ponen puestas de 150 a 200 huevos en el agua. Se alimenta
casi exclusivamente de hormigas.
