Centrolenidae

Centrolenidae

Centrolenidae is the family of the glass frogs . There are 34 species in Peru , 4 in the Madre de Dios department and 7 in the Manu area of which we include 3 species in this guide . They are green , except a couple of yellow species , with or without some small spots . Glass frogs are small to medium frogs . The common name comes from their transparent venter that reveals their internal organs , feature especially distinctive of the genus Hyalonobatrachium . Toe pads have a truncated shape . Identifying species of this family can be challenging as they are fairly similar between them ; the iris , the amount of webbing and the visibility of the internal organs are the best features for identification . They are arboreal and nocturnal . They live in streams and are pretty sensitive to habitat disturbances , especially water pollution . Glass frogs lay their eggs out of the water in leaves or rocks . They often show parental care of their clutches of eggs , and males can fight to death when in mating season . For this purpose males of some genus of the family have spines in the forelegs .
