Hamptophryne boliviana

Description : This stocky frog has a light brown dorsum and a contrasting dark brown flank and face ; separated by a black dorsolateral stripe . The dorsum usually has dark brown irregular mid-dorsal markings and a lighter longitudinal stripe . The snout is slightly pointed . The back legs have dark brown transverse bands . The venter is cream with brown flecks , which are more pronounced on the throat . In males the mottling is black . There is a thin white longitudinal stripe crossing the throat and belly . The iris is copper brown with black flecks .
Similar species : Chiasmocleis species , Ctenophryne geayi and Elachistocleis muiraquitan have very different ventral patterns . Hamptophryne alios and C . geayi also have webbing between the toes .
Habitat and ecology : A nocturnal terrestrial frog that inhabits primary and secondary lowland forests . It can be found in varzea and terra firme habitats up to 400 m asl . It is an active forager in the leaf litter , where it almost exclusively feeds on ants . It breeds mainly in the rainy season in temporary or permanent ponds . Females lay clutches between 160 and 280 eggs , usually depositing two clutches throughout the rainy season .

Descripción : Esta rana compacta tiene un dorso marrón claro con los lados de la cabeza y del cuerpo bien diferenciados por su coloración marrón oscura y por una banda dorsolateral negra . Normalmente el dorso tiene marcas mediodorsales irregulares marrón oscuro y una banda longitudinal clara . El hocico es ligeramente puntiagudo . La patas traseras tienen bandas transversales marrón oscuras . El vientre es crema con motas marrones , que son más profusas en la garganta . En los machos este moteado es negro . Presenta una banda blanca longitudinal que cruza la garganta y la tripa . El iris es marrón cobrizo con motas negras .
Especies similares : Las especies de Chiasmocleis , Ctenophryne geayi y Elachistocleis muiraquitan tienen patrones ventrales muy diferentes . Hamptophryne alios y C . geayi además tienen palmeadura en los dedos .
Hábitat y ecología : Una especie nocturna y terrestre de rana que habita bosques de tierras bajas primarios y secundarios . Puede ser encontrada en hábitats de varzea y terra firme hasta los 400 msnm . Es un depredador activo entre la hojarasca , y casi se alimenta exclusivamente de hormigas . Se reproduce principalmente en la estación húmeda en charcas temporales o permanentes . Las hembras ponen puestas de entre 160 y 280 huevos , normalmente ponen dos puestas durante la estación húmeda .
