Hylidae

Description : This medium sized frog has two different coloration patterns and intermediate phases between them . Most commonly ( the clown phase ) the ground color is reddish brown and has golden yellow markings that cover the snout and continue as wide stripes along the flanks . There is also a yellow blotch in the posterior area of the dorsum . The limbs can also possess markings . The second morph ( the giraffe phase ) is rarer , but very conspicuous . The ground color is brown with a strong golden yellow reticulated pattern . In both morphs the toes , fingers , webbing , groin and axilla are orange / red in colouration . The iris is dark bronze .
Similar species : Dendropsophus salli is very similar but is slightly smaller , has a different call , has a yellow spot on the knee and light spots in the arms that are usually , but not always , absent in D . leucophyllatus . Also the webbing in D . salli is yellow / orange versus red in D . leucophyllatus . D . bifurcus is smaller and lacks the yellow blotches in the femur . D . sarayacuensis has a similar dorsal pattern but the markings are imprecisely defined . For the differences of the giraffe form with D . triangulum check its account . The individuals from the MLC could be related to D . salli , as they are smaller and less red ventrally than those at Romero , but at the moment we include them here together .
Habitat and ecology : It can be found in permanent ponds , swamps , lakes and other permanent bodies of water . It lays between 300 to 600 eggs in overhanging vegetation and the tadpoles will drop into the water after hatching .
At the MLC : Only found in the main wetland of the reserve where it is one of the most dominant species , very easy to see and hear . It is generally found in reeds close to open water .
IUCN Status : Least Concern . Stable . ( Ver 3.1 )

MLC
Scientific synonyms / Sinónimos científicos : Hyla leucophyllata , Hyla favosa Common names / Nombres comunes : White-leaf treefrog / Ranita payaso grande
Estable . ( Ver 3.1 ) Distribution / Distribución
