Description : This medium sized frog has a very unique appearance . It is brown dorsally , with a triangular head shape . It presents a pointy tubercle on the eyelid , a black blotch resembling a tear under the eye and a black stripe running from the eye to the end of the head . There is a small pointy protuberance on the tip of the snout . The outer edges of the limbs have a white fringe . The throat is brown with a white line crossing it vertically . The chest and belly are dark brown with white warts . Toes and fingers do not have pads .
Similar species : Hemiphractus helioi has rounded toepads and a more prominent pointy protuberance on the tip of the snout .
Habitat and ecology : This species lives within the leaf litter of tropical forest up to 2000 m asl ; although it can also climb onto low vegetation . It inhabits primary and low disturbed forests . It is active both diurnally and nocturnally , and feeds mainly on other frogs . The clutch consists of 5 to 17 eggs . This species develops directly ; the eggs are kept in an open pouch on the females back , where the froglets hatch and develop for around 10 weeks .
At the MLC : Only found once in minimally disturbed forest . The individual found was a dead female carrying 12 froglets on its back , who may have died due to an intense heat wave during the dry season .
IUCN Status : Least Concern . Decreasing . ( Ver . 3.1 )

Descripción : Esta rana de tamaño mediano tiene una apariencia única . Tiene un dorso marrón , con una cabeza triangular . Presenta un tubérculo puntiagudo prominente en el párpado , una mancha negra que se parece a una lagrima bajo el ojo y una banda negra que va del ojo hasta el final de la cabeza . Tiene una pequeña protuberancia puntiaguda en la punta del hocico . Los bordes exteriores de las patas tienen un reborde blanco . La garganta es marrón con una banda blanca cruzándola verticalmente . El pecho y la tripa son marrón oscuro con verrugas blancas . Los dedos no tienen almohadillas .
Especies similares : Hemiphractus helioi tiene almohadillas digitales redondeadas y una protuberancia nasal más desarrollada .
Hábitat y ecología : Esta rana nocturna y diurna vive en la hojarasca de bosques tropicales hasta los 2000 msnm , aunque puede subir a vegetación baja . Habita bosques primarios o poco alterados . Se alimenta principalmente de otras ranas . Ponen entre 5 a 17 huevos . Es una especie con desarrollo directo , los huevos eclosionan en la espalda de las hembras en un marsupio abierto y allí los juveniles terminarán su desarrollo en unas 10 semanas .
En el MLC : Solo se ha encontrado en una ocasión , en bosque mínimamente alterado . Era una hembra muerta que estaba llevando 12 pequeñas ranas sobre su espalda . Probablemente murió a causa de una ola de calor intensa durante la época seca .
Estado de la UICN : Preocupación menor . Decreciendo . ( Ver . 3.1 )
