Description : This medium sized frog has an unmistakable appearance . The head is triangular shaped and the back vertices of this triangle protrude out of the head . The tip of the snout has a small pointy protuberance . The eyelids show two pointy protuberances , resembling horns . The dorsum is tan to dark brown with faint markings which are more obvious at day time . The limbs show dark brown transversal bands . The venter is cream with dark flecks more profuse on limbs and throat . The iris is dark copper with fine black reticulations .
Similar species : Hemiphractus scutatus is similar but its canthal ridges are not prominent and it lacks the ridges behind the eyes . It also has only one very prominent horn on the eyelid instead of two smaller ones like in H . helioi .
Habitat and ecology : This nocturnal and arboreal frog inhabits lowland and montane forests up to 2000 m asl . It is thought to be a primary forest dweller , although we have found it in secondary forest as well . There is no tadpole phase and the eggs develop and hatch on the back of the females . Females will carry on their backs around 18 froglets . As with other species in the genus , it mainly feeds on other frogs .

Descripción : Esta rana de tamaño mediano tiene un aspecto inconfundible . La cabeza es triangular y los vertices traseros de este triangulo sobresalen de la cabeza . La punta del hocico tiene una pequeña protuberancia puntiaguda . Los párpados presentan dos protuberancias puntiagudas que se parecen a unos cuernos . El dorso varía de canela a marrón oscuro con marcas difusas que son más claras de día . Las patas tienen bandas transversales marrón oscuro . El vientre es crema con motas oscuras que son más copiosas en las patas y garganta . El iris es cobre oscuro con reticulado fino negro .
Especies similares : Hemiphractus scutatus es parecido , pero sus crestas cantales no son prominentes y tampoco tiene las crestas tras los ojos . Además solo tiene un cuerno muy prominente en el párpado en vez de dos más pequeños en H . helioi .
Hábitat y ecología : Esta rana nocturna y arbórea habita bosques de tierras bajas y montanos hasta los 2000 msnm . Se cree que es una especie de bosque primario , aunque también la hemos encontrado en bosque secundario . No tiene fase de renacuajo y los huevos se desarrollan y eclosionan en la espalda de las hembras . Estas llevaran en torno a 18 pequeñas ranas en sus espaldas . Como otras especies de este género , se alimenta principalmente de otras ranas .
