Description : This medium-sized poison frog has an unmarked black dorsum . An orange dorsolateral stripe runs from the tip of the snout to the groin , where it becomes a bright orange blotch that extends slightly to the anterior surface of the thigh . The limbs are brown with faint dark markings . All the ventral surfaces are blue with a bold black reticulated pattern . The iris is black with copper flecks .
Similar species : Ameerega hahneli and A . picta are smaller with a white dorsolateral stripe and with yellow blotches in the shanks . A . simulans has a green / yellow dorsolateral stripe . A . boliviana has a yellow dorsolateral stripe , a white ventrolateral stripe and the venter is cream with black marbling . A . yungicola has a white ventrolateral stripe and a non-marbled throat . Also , the call differs from all the species previously mentioned .
Habitat and ecology : This terrestrial frog inhabits fast-moving rocky streams in primary and low disturbance forest areas . It is more active at dusk and dawn when males call . Females deposit around 20-25 eggs inside rock shelters next to the stream . The males will protect the clutch until they hatch , and then carry them to the stream . Reproduction is thought to take place during both the dry and the rainy seasons .
At the MLC : It is found in rocky fast-moving streams in primary and minimally disturbed forest areas from 500 to 900 m asl .

Descripción : Esta rana venenosa de tamaño mediano tiene un dorso negro sin marcas . Una banda dorsolateral naranja va de la punta del hocico a la ingle , donde se convierte en una mancha naranja brillante que se extiende ligeramente a la superficie anterior del muslo . Las patas son marrones con marcas oscuras poco claras . Todas las áreas ventrales son azules con un patrón reticulado negro fuerte . El iris es negro con motas cobrizas .
Especies similares : Ameerega hahneli y A . picta son más pequeñas con una banda dorsolateral blanca y manchas amarillas en las patas . A . simulans tiene una banda dorsolateral verde / amarilla . A . boliviana tiene una banda dorsolateral amarilla , una banda ventrolateral blanca y el vientre es crema con un patrón marmoleado negro . A . yungicola tiene una banda ventrolateral blanca y una garganta sin marcas . Además el canto es diferente al de todas las especies que se han mencionado .
Hábitat y ecología : Esta rana terrestre habita quebradas rocosas de aguas rápidas en bosques primarios o poco alterados . Es más activa al amanecer y atardecer cuando los machos cantan . Las hembras depositan entren 20 y 25 huevos en refugios entre rocas cerca de la quebrada . Los machos protegeran la puesta hasta que eclosionen y después los llevarán hasta la quebrada . La reproducción se cree que se da lugar tanto en la estación húmeda como en la seca .
