This job was the largest single site Australian Defence capital works project
since World War II for complete relocation of Defence facilities and assets
from a 190 hectare Moorebank site to the Holsworthy Barracks 110ha.
School of Military Engineering included the delivery of a mix of engineering
instructional and learning facilities lecture theatres, classrooms, office
buildings, and accommodation. Fully furnished Officers Mess, live-in
accommodation, office accommodation, entry precinct, museum, chapel,
workshops, Q stores. The varied project was akin to constructing an entire
village within a secure military base, including an Olympic-scale swimming
pool and gym, motels, a new mess, and 350,0000ha training ground. It also
included design and construction of a new public heritage learning centre,
the Museum of Military Engineering, representing the biggest museum
move in the southern hemisphere. The Australian Constructors Association
and Engineers Australia awarded the $870m Moorebank Relocation (MUR)
project the nation’s most coveted industry prize.
