The reality is, marriage simply isn’t what it used to be. And divorce perhaps doesn’t have the stigma it used to. One problem though is that society has not caught on to the changing climate of the modern family. From insurance and taxes to healthcare and even banking, the United States economy, and its related stereotypes, is still stuck in the 1950s. Well, wake up America! Unlike in those days, we actually don’t have a “new family model” in town. The nuclear family simply isn’t the norm today. We are moving in together before marriage, we are having kids or not having kids, we are divorcing, we are staying single and we are marrying people that look nothing like us, or are quite a bit like us in more ways than the “old fashioned” way of life would have approved. There is diversity in every way now. Same sex marriage. Opposite race marriage. Rise of communal living. And I almost forgot polyamorous love. There is a growing number of couples where having a third or “other” in the mix just makes for a happier and more satisfying life.
