he 24th annual celebration of music, comedy, and film, SXSW, took place March 10-18, giving more than 72, 000 participants an experience of a lifetime. This bustling little city becomes aglow with actors, musicians, and comedians dining and waiting in line with you to see the latest and greatest movies and acts. Sure, the barbecue is pretty good too, but the films you will soon see in theaters (and digital platforms) are just as mouth-watering.
Delectable documentaries like Matthew Salleh’s “Barbecue” takes us around the world to discover the origins of this centuries old cooking method while Maio Wang’s film “Maineland” documents Chinese children who study abroad in the United States during their high school years. And right here at home, we discover the roots of the beloved magazine “Highlights” in the film “44 Pages,” reminding us that kids still need to be kids while embracing a combination of new technology and tried and true print journalism.
