A PIECE OF
SOCCER HISTORY
FROM BANK TO BAR
Rob Gordon Bennett spent 29 years as a
manager at Barclays Bank in Hereford, his
home town but decided on a change of
career. Now he is pulling pints in his own
pub, the ‘Gordon Bennett’ in High Town.
He has bucked the trend of city pubs
closing and bought what was once The
Garrick, and later Watercress Harry’s until
it, too, closed a couple of years ago. Rob
gutted the interior and has created something
special with a blend of tradition and modern
design to appeal to Herefordians.
The Gordon Brown will focus on
traditional real ales and a wide range of
international beers, local ciders and classic
spirits such as the local Chase vodka
alongside a food offering based on local
produce. Opened at the beginning of October
Rob’s new venture is already proving a
popular venue and will certainly be in the inplace for Christmas parties.
Rob has switched smoothly from bank to bar

Today’s professional footballers earn mega bucks – Wayne Rooney’s pay
packet is said to be worth £240,000 a week, almost double what the Prime
Minister makes in a year.
But it has not always been so. Way back in 1938 Hereford United was
paying its players 25 shillings a match according to a document that has
come to light. (£1.25p in today’s money)
Amongst family papers Phil Daw of Tupsley (pictured) came across an
agreement signed by his father, Harold ‘Chubby’ Daw when he joined
United, then playing in the Birmingham League, as a midfielder. But
Chubby’s football earnings soon came to an end with the start of World War
2 and his RAF call-up. After the war he played for Bromyard and became
