SCOUTS PREPARED TO DELIVER
YOUR CHRISTMAS CARDS
Towards the end of September each year the six Scout Groups, who organise Scout Post in Hereford, get prepared to deliver thousands of
Christmas cards, arranging collection venues, printing leaflets and posters, checking the special stamps and organising the volunteers to “get
the show on the road”.
One of the organisers, David Owen, explains how the service works: “After you have handed over your cards, at one of our numerous
collection points, they are checked to ensure they are within the City boundary, enthusiastically stamped (often by a 6 year old), coded, counted
and rough sorted into the six collection areas. The Scout Groups then meet to exchange cards which are sorted into streets, house names/numbers
checking the surname on each card matches. Finally it’s the delivery stage when our young members and their parents have the fun of posting
cards through your letter box.”
Since the inception of the service in 1982 Hereford Scouts have delivered over 1.3 million cards. This year it is anticipated 45,000 cards will
be delivered. In 1982 the cost was 5p, today it is 30p, still a big saving on the cost of normal stamps As Christmas day this year is on Sunday,
December 25 there will no delivers that weekend..
