NEW LOOK HEREFORD FACES OPPOSITION FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2018 • PAGE 39 Hereford’s fine Victorian railway station is about to be dwarfed by two very large new modern buildings. Plans have already been summited for a new Medical Centre to be used by six newly merged GP surgeries on council owned land directly in front of the railway station Now, Hereford Art College wants to build a student’s residential block on the site of what was Rockfield DIY, reputedly bought by Herefordshire Council for £6m as part of the new link road project and currently used as a car park. Hereford Civic Society are opposed to both plans. Proposed accommodation for art students CALL FOR CITY MASTER PLAN Hereford is growing fast, but lacks a ‘Master Plan’ to control development in the decades ahead. A rural market town for centuries, it is rapidly becoming an industrial mammoth. Good for jobs, but at what risk to quality of life and more specifically the strain on the infrastructure of roads, hospital, schools. Hereford Civic Society is calling for a Master Plan to be developed and has the support of businesses and the Local Enterprise Partnership, but it is a no-go from Herefordshire Council. When the council launched the development of the old cattle market in 2004, it was urged to incorporate the whole of the historic city centre in the regeneration plan. But never did Now, in an era when the nation’s High Streets are under threat from on-line shopping giants it is more vital than ever. The Civic Society is asking Herefordians to come up with their own ideas for how the city should develop through the 21st Century.
